  • Training in Iraq

I am deployed right now to a small outpost in norther Iraq and the COP that I am on is small about 70 by 70 yards and there is a small dilapidated gym here but there is a nice almost new heavy bag probably 80lbs. So I have never boxed before but I have always had an interest for it. I ordered some Title gel bag gloves as well as hand wraps and a jump rope and some instructional dvds. As this is my only form of cardio work out here I really enjoy hitting the heavy bag but I know only as much as the instructional dvds. I would appreciate some tips for workouts and or training routines to become a better boxer without a trainer of course as well as getting the most efficient work out as I can.

have u heard of the tabata training method? very intense - http://www.squidoo.com/tabatatraining so ur sprinting would be doing punch outs. Also stuff like 4 hard punches 4 push ups do that for 3 minutes straight n u'll feel the burn. Just got to improvise with stuff mate - highly recommened u get a training buddy though

I defintley recommend this book mate .It's a quality style of training and works .It's intense .For fitness as well add burpees to your sessions .You'll have to learn how to execute the burpee proper for stamina. it's a quality exercise .it shows you on the dvd with full throttle conditioning. The whole idea of a burpees is to sprint , add a push up and jump as high as you can for intensity

For skill I think it would be a good idea to buy some pads as well and get a training buddy .That's how I learned my footwork in the army tae ,My pti took me on the pads .I have a hut with a heavybag but I used to just throw an arm punch .You have to learn how to step through with your punches .
Try and find instructions on how to use the pads on the net or youtube or something .You could buy some sparring kit as well for you and a buddy , gum shields , hand wraps etc

              Great advice

Thanks for the advice guys. I cant really have a training partner out here cause there are only me and two other guys from my team here and we work 12 hour shifts everyday and the 3rd guy is the maintainer so he is on call 24/7 so as much as I would love to have a partner for this I work the 8pm to 8am shift and besides the birds coming in and out all night on the pad outside the compound this place is dead. I got the Freddie Roach boxing basics and a Hitting the Heavybag dvds when I got my my gear but they dont really go over any work outs or training routines so this is great.

We do work out here, bumbells for arms and shoulders and chest, we have a kettelbell for some cleans and other workouts, then for legs just squats and jumping rope on top of all our push ups and sit ups, leg raises, tricep dips etc.
