  • Will the following affect my boxing skills?

Hi folks, first time poster. I've been reading the forum on a daily basis for quite some time now - many thanks to everyone who has posted tips on dieting, nutrition, training routines etc - it has been a massive help.

    Anyway,

After returning to boxing on the 5th January after a break at New Year, I returned feeling surprisingly sharp and quick, considering I ate and drank like a pig over the festive period!

However, after training very hard recently, I have decided to take a 2 week break from my boxing gym and do a 30 minute road run 5 or 6 times a week to imrpove my fitness. I will also include some sit ups/crunches etc when I get home from the run.

My question is, after taking 2 weeks off from the gym, is it likely that my speed and power will decrease? Is my plan to do plenty of road running for 2 weeks and ignoring the boxing gym a bad idea?

Thoughts and advice would be appreciated, many thanks.

2 weeks will do little to harm you. However taking time off the gym to improve your fitness is probably unnecessary. Real fight fitness is honed in the gym. Running and sprints are great, but you will never be able to fight hard without hard sparring.

Stay at the gym, and work specifically on your fitness 3 times a week. Do one distance run, roughly 5 miles (8km) at a steady pace. Do one shorter, more intense run, say 3 miles (5km) at a hard pace that exhausts you. And then do one sprint session. Find an oval or a running track or whatever, do a few laps and dynamic stretches to warm up and then do 4 800m sprints, with a one minute rest in between each one. Go as hard as you can. It will be very hard but just keep pushing. (800m is usually two laps of a standard running track, or you can do two laps of a soccer field/rugby field) after this do some shorter sprints, do 10 50m sprints, with a 10 second rest in between each one. Go full burst on each one. (50m is roughly half a soccer/rugby field)

Do that, plus keep going to the boxing gym, and you will be fit to fight.

Thanks for the reply mate, much appreciated.

The reason I need to take around 2 weeks out of the boxing gym is because I got caught up in a street fight the other night and my hand is badly swollen and I am unable to move 2 of my fingers. Really annoyed by this.

I'll just need to make-do with roadwork and sit ups for a few weeks, sadly.

Oh, that's a different story then. Well do the roadwork I mentioned and take however long off the gym you need for that hand to heal up.

Get em checked out, they may be broken....if so, you are gonna need more than a few weeks, lol. Soak them in ice water or use ice packs and anti- inflammatory pills to get the swelling down.

I agree. Hard sparring and experience there, is worht MUCH more then running. I've run all year, and I was in so much greater shape when I sparred 3-4 times a week.

With the road work and sit ups you can also shadow box. I ripped out the webbing between my pinky and ring finger a couple weeks ago on a nail trying to break down a pallet for a bon fire. i havnt been able to spar or hit the bag but i still run, do sit ups, pull ups and shadow box all the time. If anything i feel faster, just not as powerful.
