its more down to anticipation of the punch coming
    Its just a natural reaction

I like EzzardFan's post. You only need a peripheral cue to react in a trained, to the point of second nature, response. I like to focus at the chest/shoulder area, it is a good center.
Agreed. A long time ago someone told me to look at the shoulder and watch if they get tense my opponent is going to punch...Bad idea,I lose my own concentration instead.
I think you just have to anticipate them and be ready when the opponent is on the attack. The other punches that you see on your peripheral are always easy to dodge because you are already on a defensive stance.

I tend to use both forms of sight during a sparring session, when im simply fighting i look at the opponents chest (right between each pectorial muscle), this way i see their head movement, each hand movement (both offensive and defensive movements) their weight changes with regards to foot work as well as the whole body movement in relation to the back ground, i do this by looking at their chest but focusing my eyes about 2 or 3 metres behind them. However if im consciously planing a burst, or counter attacking measeure, i find it easier to focus on the attack im looking for, eg if im trying to counter off their right cross i focus on it, their jab is simply a distraction that i can pick off with defense with out real effort and then as soon as i see the right hand move BAM i snap into action with the counter, this can be applied to many different situations

I used to stare them in the eyes for intimidation and to gauge their responsiveness, if that's not working for you try the chin.

Very easy, his eyes will tell you everything. And you have to keep the contact to see what's comming, even while you're having your guard up!

This hasn't work for me in any aspect of my life..... i've stared at peoples eyes during poker and made bad decisions. I've stared at peoples eyes when they've lied to me and believed them... I've stared at peoples eyes when sparring and got kicked in the face.....

Maybe i don't read eyes so well...

To look really awesome at dodging punches and kicks but not really do much work... just get your distance established, i have long arms and legs, so i hang just on the edge of their reach where i can still land solid, and any time they throw i just lean a little and can make them miss, its not that i see where the punch is coming i'm just at a distance where if i lean they'll miss...

But i should add that i am terrible at both boxing, and martial arts. So my advice might be more detrimental than helpful.
