  • Lead hand

Hi guys, for starters I am a southpaw and have good power and snap in my left my right is another story. I have great control with my right interms of mixig it up I have no problem throwing different kinds of combinations with my lead hand. What I want to improve though is my power and snap. I know that constant practice of technique and the obvious conditioning factor will improve my right but are there any specific exercises that the experienced AM boxers on here have done to improve their weaker side?l Any help would be great. Thanks guys.

Do a couple rounds per night on the heavy bag throwing only your right hand. Jab, double jab, hook off of jab, whatever. Just only use your right hand.

Shadowbox with a small weight (1lb or 2lbs) in your hands. Be careful though do not go full power at first until you have thoroughly warmed up and stretched as you can hurt your shoulder/elbow/wrist quite easily if you are not careful.

Like others have stated practice that right hand more.

I have more heavy power on my left, however I have not lose faith in developing my right hand.

My coach always told me to keep practicing, but more importantly, to develop technique on it. Whether it be a right hook, st8 right hand, right cross, or just a simple jab in the southpaw stance, use technique. From your legs to your shoulders, technique is most important.

I noticed that when you constantly use the right hand on the heavy bag more you tend to shoot it more out there in sparring or amateur fights. At least in my case. I remember when I first started to practice on it and It was time to spar I would just shoot it out like a jab and use it more than my jab.

          Try it bro.

Thanks guys as I mentioned before I have technique down and I throw my right alot for example I can easily throw jab, upper, jab, and hook off my right hand, and it works well I just want more explosiveness I'm assuming I expressed myself wrong but I have great control of my right hand and am successful with it I would just like more explosiveness. I'm going to keep throwing it though since everyone responded to keep practicing technique. I was just looking more for an exercise geared towards making that side more explosive not soo much as technique even though they almost go hand in hand but I've seen people have terrible technique and their leads just shoot out incredibly. I guess practice makes perfect. Thanks though guys and if anyone else can chime in on exercise specific drills for explosiveness in their leads then please do. Thanks guys!

hold a medicine ball to your chest and push off while twisting your hips (as if you were throwing a punch) into a solid wall. do this while in your stance. you can also shadow box with weights.

I see how this can work and I appreciate this advice alot! thanks! I now recall seeing this done once at this one gym and it must've completely slipped my mind. Good looks, if that's the case then maybe I should also try trunk twists on an incline bench with a medicine ball in my hands or dumbell. So basically the idea is to develop torque, right? Wow good looks, this just opened up a world of drill possiblities! Good looks bro!
