  • New Boxer Needs Advice

    Hi,

I know you've read this a million times and they're mostly the same. Long time fan of boxing and want to try to box either for fitness or to find an all over workout for the enitre body. There are others saying the same thing I want to do. I want to box. Professionally. But of course no access to a boxing gym or money for equipment.

I'm in the US Navy and I get deployed to Iraq every 6 motnhs or so. My goal is to at least try out for the All Navy Boxing Team. It's probably the only thing (besides the obvious reasons for wanting to serve my country) that I will allow myself to re-enlist and stay in the Navy to do for a career. I have always been athletic but just need guidance to get to where I want to be.

I'm stationed at NAS Whidbey Island Oak Harbor WA and this little military town harldy has anything in regards to boxing other than a punching bag at the gym on base. I have my own training gloves and mitts but no coach or sparring partner. I've looked all over the internet to find a boxing gym close enough to check out in person but the closest gym is about an hours drive away. In that hour it takes to get there I can possibly be halfway through a workout regiment on my own.

What i'm looking for is a workout regiment that I can use here. I have acces to a gym with free weights as well as a punching bag and speed bag. There's nothing but area to run so that's not a problem either. Can anyone help me out with this or should I just resort to coming up with my own workout and going on from there?

Thanks for the help in advnce.

u need at least a parner...

to be good in boxing,u gotta be fighting,be in fights or sparring helps to and like that u can use ur mind ,defense, offensive, and combination is the best way to practice...
one way that i'd like to do for training is,everyday with a friend from the gym, sparring but not hitting hard, jus ur speed, and hit dont get hit..like 10 minuts..it works and helps u a lot, boxing is mind, fightin u gotta put that first in ur mind with that in ur mind and good shape u can do it,but at least u need a parner sparring..ask anybody one of ur friend and that is the best thing in boxing not a bag, thats to see how ur power and speed working..

ok,when ur sparring u gotta try many os styles and see wich one wokrs in u..if u can watch a lot of boxing and mixed any of thoses boxers styles with u in the sparring.remenber always when u trow a puch gotta be fasta and then gotta get it back to ur face as fast as u can.moving ur head, stay in ur both feets ...and one style that works realy good is using ur right feet,or knee u gotta like go down on ur knee and ur body to the right side like ward or mayweather.it works..

my english is sucks ,i hope u undertand somthing lol jajaja

work on your stance, most important thing first is to get a good stance and footwork

There aren't that many people here that are really reliable to count on as a sparring partner here. There are a few but they work different shifts or are always busy. I usually spend most of my time hitting the heavy bag. I'll watch countless videos of boxers to analyze styles, footwork and other patterns of their individual boxing. For some reason I've picked up the habit of switching between orthodox and southpaw.

Does anyone have any basic workout routines that they do to help them train?

Start off with basics; master one punch at a time then move on to the combinations until u feel you are throwing them smoothly and correctly, but without a coach to correct you it will be hard. Work on your footwork, move backwards and forward and practice pivoting. Having a large mirror is helpful as you can see if it looks natural or smooth. Practice all those thing while you work the bag. Focus more on form and technique instead of power for now. You will want to do your bag work by rounds and increase the rounds as your conditioning will allow you to do so. Run in the morning or in the evenings. If you have a buddy do simulated sparring, this is an effective way to gradually work your way into sparring sessions. Hope this was helpful.
