Most experienced trainers will throw a new guy in there with a big man, or a more skilled man, right off the bat. They like to see whether or not you are cut out for it. Of course a good trainer is also going to know when to step in and not let you get hurt. Unless your upcoming fight is with a speed guy, it can be beneficial to spar with guys a little bigger than you. Same concept as hitting the bag with heavier gloves, that way in a real fight, your hands feel lighter; well getting hit by a who hits harder can't help but condition you for a fight with a guy your size. Focus on defense first. The rest will fall into place. Be careful with those body shots from heavy hitters. Get a padded rib protector to absorb shots against a guy much bigger than you until you build up your core. Most gyms will allow them, especially if you're sparring a guy who is much heavier than you.

I'm 260 and in my gym, I damage fools like everyone in this thread. Spar at your own weight, there's always going to be someone who can test you there.

That there isn't someone who can test him at his own weight or that I will damage you?

Because I am confident in both

That's great. Weight is what it's all about, that's why there are weight classes. But that's not to say that a little guy can't put it on a big guy in especially in sparring. I'm no Homicide Hank, but I've definitely given the business to some ****y mutha ****ers bigger than me on a couple occasions.

It's advice for a beginner wanting to take on a heavier guy. Some people won't get too far into training with broken ribs. Last time I checked that wasn't a badge of courage. In my first week sparring I cracked a rib fighting a guy about 60 lbs heavier than me. I didn't know how to protect myself properly, and got caught. Wasn't that I was *****, or that I couldn't take the heat. I wanted to get back in there the next day but I was sidelined for about 8 weeks. It would have helped to have some protection in that area until I learned the ropes. Just throwing some advice out there for a beginner. Not everyone is superman like you. Let me guess, you spar without headgear and a cup right?
