Well. When I first started running, I realized squats got a lot easier. So that could be that my leg muscles got stronger or it could mean that I just weighed less?

Simple answer, yes... to a very diminished degree. After a period of 6 -8 weeks, you will probably notice a difference in your legs, but they won't be massive strength or size gains. If you want bigger and/or stronger legs, but want to do it with a cardiovasular approach, i suggest hill runnning and using the exercise steppers (addded inches to my thighs), a friend of mine swears by training on an exercise bike with lots of resistance (works for him apparently) other than that, you have to do weight training.

I don't see why you HAVE to do weight training. Depends what you mean by 'strengthening' your legs. If you are after size and aesthetic, then maybe you have to do weights. But last time I checked this was a boxing forum and you can strenghten your legs with sprints and long runs up and down hills. Plyometrics also help, and i think some of the more explosive workouts will give the strenght needed for boxing more than weights would. Weight training is slow and less dynamic, and does slwo people down
