Right I have terrible shin splints and am not able to run or jump rope. The swimming baths are constantly booked by pensioners or children so my last available cardio option is the stationary exercise bike in the gym. I know you all swear by running but i'm thinking we only run to increase our cardiovascular fitness. Cycling does the same thing. Obviously you would have to cycle more miles and at a faster pace but it's still a cardio exercise right?

If you're gym has an airdyne bike, that's one of the best peices of cardio equiptment you can find, IMO. Do Short Intense Intervals on it.
You can also use an elliptical, it's very low impact so you won't have to worry about your shin splints either.
Also what may be your problem with Shin splints is you may have flat feet.
So it may be a good idea to invest in some shoes with good arch support.

I'll ride my bike in the hills for a good cardio workout. Running really isn't good for women due to hard pounding on the pelvic area which can cause problems in females. JAT

Also try going on the rowing machine, I do 6 x 2 minute rounds (or 4x3 alternatively) and then 10 x 30 sec sprints with a 10 sec rest in between sprints - remember to go as hard as you can, and suck in the air deep in-between intervals.
umm, lady fan... you were pretty much asking for it.
