  • Glove questions!

Alright so for 5 months, I've been using 14 oz bag gloves. However, these are starting to get pretty beat, and I've been thinking about getting sparring gloves for a bit now. However, I'm not sure what oz to get them in. I'm at 136 lbs currently, however I hope to drop to about 130 lbs. I think for my weight I ought to get 10 oz gloves, and I tried on a pair just earlier today that I felt really good with. However, I read that using heavier gloves can have benefits for when you then switch over to using lighter gloves. Is this true? And if that's the case, should I get heavier sparring gloves, say 16 oz?

Aaand a side question, is it a good idea to do heavy bag work with sparring gloves? And what if the gloves are 10 oz? Or should I just stick to using my 14 oz bag gloves for all bag work?

Ask your coach what size gloves they allow. At a gym I used to go to, everyone had to use 16 ounces and up for sparring no matter their weight.

At the gym I'm at now with your size, they'll let you use 14 ounce gloves but then again everyone here has to get a physical evaluation from the doctor and be licensed before even light sparring. It's a major pain in the ass.

Best bet would be to ask your coach or just get some 16 ounce gloves that fit.

For your side question, Me personally I've always used training/sparring gloves for bag work. I'd just use whatever was my oldest pair, but wouldn't use that same pair when sparring. You gotta protect your partner. Then again, I've never had problems with my hands so it might be different for everyone.

    Good luck

16oz bag gloves to hit the bag and mitts, and 16oz training gloves for sparring. Never use the same gloves that you'd use on the bag or to train with to spar with someone. Not cool. Most gyms have a policy that everyone where 16's specifically for sparring only, but the general rule is 16oz above 147, 14oz below 147. Using 16oz to both train and spar will definitely benefit you in the long run. You can't go wrong with 16s.

yea its true the benifits of wearing heavyeir gloves. I hit decently hard and pree fast with my 16's becuase thats all ive ever used, bag or sparring so ive had to adapt to hit hard enough with them to fight with dudes atleast 30 lbs heavyeir than me and fast enough that i can get my hard shots in and be out before they can hit me.

As in when i wear 10 oz (competition gloves) my hands are blinding fast and im pree sure ide hit harder with smaller gloves than my larger ones.

mitts is the one place i'll use smaller gloves.
mitts is all about technique and speed, so ideally you want to wear exactly what you're going to wear to fight when using mitts.
as a mitt-holder, i hate when dudes have gloves bigger than my mitts, makes it hard to catch and just feels like slop.

because you'll bust up your sparring partner
the larger/heavier the glove, the more padding and the safer it is for your partner.

Sparring is meant for practicing, and technique improvement. It'd be almost like a real fight every-time you sparred and guys would always be injured.

you seem to have the answers for every question you are asking, when you hit the bag were gloves that you are comfortable with, how should anyone but your self know what glove to wear
