  • Crosses and Left Hooks in combinations?

There is something that confuses me to death, and I might be over thinking this, but I'll give it a go. With combinations, like 2-3-2 (Cross, Left Head Hook, Cross) or 3-2-3 (Left Head Hook), I try to throw each punch at full extension.

I always feel because I throw the Cross at full extension in these combinations, it slows the combination down because it takes longer for the Cross to get back to the guard before I can land the Left Hook.

Should I shorten up the Cross for better speed and flow in combinations involving the Cross and Left Hook, or should I just throw my punches at full extensions in Cross, Left Hook combinations (combos like 1-2-3, 2-3-2, 3-2-2, 2-3, etc)?

What i have been teached since i started boxing is that when punching in combination, the last punch of your combination has to be the hardest.

It depends on the situation but it's what i do most of the time.

Lets say i throw a 1-2, i'll put everything in my straight left after the jab.

However if i throw a 1-2-3, the straight left won't be as hard as the one in the previous combo, because i want it to be faster so i can put everything in my final right hook.

Thats how i do it because thats what was teached to me. I'm interested to see what other people will have to say on the subject.

Let me just say this, if you encounter some one who can throw fully extended combinations while you cant, who do you think is going to have an advantage? You would be surprised what some top amateurs and especially professionals can do in the ring. Just keep practicing and adjusting to diffrent methods of punching, adjust and work you muscles and stamina to be able to do things like that.

Good stuff, Equilibrium, it does make a lot of sense.

I feel that for most people, it's important to throw the first punches in a combination loose and relaxed so that one can get into position to deliver the key punch with explosiveness. It takes some very impressive conditioning for the muscles to contract at such a speed that every punch in a combination is hard and fast.

A similar one i like is L.hook - Cross - L.hook. Personally I shorten the Cross for speed and put the power into the last hook. I'd go for speed and then **** that last shot in. If your looking for extension maybe concentrate on your 1-2s or 1-2-1s
