  • Cant set up combinations

Most of the time during sparring, i take on the role as aggressor. I can corner people & make them react to my movements pretty easily, but when i have them on the ropes i cant consistently start my combinations. I keep walking into jabs so i end up only landing a few potshots here and there.
I know i have to use head movement & i can slip a few jabs while pressuring them but when on the ropes they never throw a punch until i commit to going forward. How should i approach a waiting opponent on the ropes?

And you never will if you don't quit telling yourself that you 'cant'.

Just keep showing up and getting in there to roll. One day... perseverance..........Rockin'

      Yes, practice makes perfect.

A good coach will show how to connect with combinations while an opponent is waiting to counter off the ropes.

When he is on the ropes: Feint him, draw him out and then smash one of your fists in to his face.

Learn about him with your feints./ Feint him and use your eyes to his reaction each time, he'll show you something. Then feint and jump all over his something.........Rockin'

          Try feints.

What i do is throw those feinting jabs to throw off their timing whenever **** gets sus, then start a combo with a fake jab then turn it to a left hook (orthodox), the left hook even if not powerful will still make them shell up, then throw a right, straight or hook, depends on the opening, if no opening i go back.

it worked most of the times for me, the others the opponent just gets out of the ropes, you can get a hook in when they move out if you're focused enough.

With enough practice you'll get it done ez.

I also recommend light sparring, it got me more fluid with combos and punch selection.

Walk in, wait for the jab, then slip it to the outside and counter with a 1-2.

Or walk in, wait for the jab, then slip it to the inside and counter with a right hand-left hook. The left hook can go to the head or to the body depending on what's open.

              Are you orthodox?

Feint and shift to an angle. Come in with a punch they wouldn't expect. Aggressive Orthodox fighters typically do well when they switch up the left hand when coming forward, keep them guessing how you are going to come in.

Anyways this is my opinion based on the assumption you are orthodox and giving the the same look coming forward.

I just tried this today. The other guy was craftier and knocked me on my ass.
