  • Just getting started

So about a month ago I was at a friends house and he had a couple pairs of boxing gloves. I've always been a boxing fan, but never actually fought. We sparred for a bit and I realized that I really enjoyed the concept of fighting. I realize that without any type of training I wasn't really boxing, but it was fun regardless. Since then, I've play-fought with a few other friends who are also interested in boxing. I want to legitimately get involved with the sport.

The problem is, the extent of my training materials is watching professional fights. I live in Blacksburg, VA where there is no local gym and I am unable to go to my college's boxing club due to scheduling issues. I am a senior in college and will be moving after graduation to a larger area where there is a gym available, but I'd like to get a head-start.

So what should I do to prepare? I've been weight training MWF and doing cardio every day of the week so that I am not puking my guts out after 3 minutes of boxing. I own a pair of 16oz gloves so I practice throwing punches(jabs, hooks, straights, uppercuts) and trying to make them feel more natural.

However, after that...I'm not sure where to go. What would ya'll recommend for someone who has no access to a gym or trainer?

by what you are writing, you seem to lack any motivation to be a boxer and any desire to learn, you are in college keep up your studies and watch the fights on tv

u need to find one, if u train yourself too long alone u will develop lots of bad habbits. If u have friend with good amatuer boxing experience or a pro thats good he can help u.

What part of my post would give you that impression? My lack of training is due to geography, not a lack of motivation. If I didn't have a desire to learn, I wouldn't have written my original post.

Next time I want unhelpfulness, I'll order it from the menu.

Would you suggest NOT practicing basic punches until I can get to a gym and instead just work on general fitness?

just by the way you describe the punches you throw and by the size of your gloves

And what would that have to do with a lack of motivation? I'll be the first to admit I don't know a thing about boxing, so instead of telling me to "give up", why not educate me?

Why not answer my question of "what SHOULD I be doing?" rather than being pretentious?
