I take a small step to the right to transfer weight, while doing that I twist my upper body a bit to the left then the moment my foot lands, that's when I twist my upper body to the right for the hook. With this, the body twist will give you more power. I also make sure the hook comes from the bottom, armpits closed. Some raises their arm parallel to the ground then twist. I don't know, its easy for the opponent to see it.

Left hook feels weak and awkward.

I used to throw my left hooks with full power, modeled after Joe Frazier. Then I added a left hook to the body/left hook to the head combo like Julio Cesar Chavez.
But after watching Roger Mayweather on the "Mastering the Mitts" dvd I added a fast double left hook to the head with the power dialed way back.
It totally changed my concept of how to use the punch.
And constantly playing with the speeds on it has given me sort of a muscle memory vocabulary that allows me to fine tune the left hook however I want.
If I want more speed I know where to look to modify things, and same for when I want more power.

I worked in construction while boxing and I found digging holes with a shovel helped with my left hook. It’s a somewhat similar motion to have a spade full of dirt and kind of left hook it out of the hole.
of course practice shadow boxing and in the gym helps more. The more you practice the proper motion the more natural it becomes and then you can start playing with your speed power and timing

Honestly I improved the power and accuracy in my kids left by making them both train in the southpaw position for a week. We did the same exact training we normally do but in the southpaw position. After their Sunday off, we trained back in the orthodox position and their left significantly improved. It was like they had a lot of confidence in it.

I know I've already posted plenty on this subject, so I'll keep this one brief.
I typically train 3 min rounds, except I switch from orthodox to southpaw at the half waypoint.
I also think slipping the right hand to your left and 45 degrees forward creates a great position in which to twist up and land your LH with considerable force. You can use it as a feint too as Canelo does. Also, a great position to fire the right hand down the pipe.
A lot of very helpful instruction in this thread.
Good Luck.

Put a basketball or volleyball on your biceps like you are placing it in a headlock. Then practice moving around with your feet at different feet placement.

Robinson, RJJ, Trinidad, Floyd all throw perfect left hooks in all the variety of angles you'll ever need. Those are masters of the perfect left hook.
Pro-tips:- Make sure you hit with your top two knuckles. If you hit knuckles of your ring and pinky finger you lose the power.
- Get into the power position for your hook and throw: flat right foot, left foot on the ball, and pivot your left foot. Just like how you're supposed to have a flat left foot and pivot your right foot when throwing a power right hand.
- Learn how to snap, nobody does snap anymore. When your hook lands, pull it back into position as fast as you can like you're punching hot lava. You'll notice your right guard pulling/twisting your torso back is giving your left hook power, it's crazy! This takes a long time to perfect, but once you get it, you hear the crack of the snap and snap is power!
- Bob and weave left-to-right after a hook and try bob and weave right-to-left into the left hook.
- Try left hook - right hand - left hook combo's. Focus on swiveling your torso and the tempo of your punches. First two are lite, last is the big one. Think of an engine revving up to full speed. Learn what crescendo means.
- Throw a weak right hand past the bag on the left side of the bag, flat left foot so get your torso in a twisted position and your right foot is pivoted toes facing 12 (you're just looking to get into the power position), then switch your pivots for a big power left hook. Focus on pulling that right hand back into guard position, it gives your hook power.
Those are master level tools for your left hook and you ain't going to find that on youtube.
Do NOT square up, forget whoever you're talking about. Always traditional boxing stance.
If I even ting someones chin on the street with my left hook, they out 90%. Practice makes perfect.Last edited by War Room; 03-31-2021, 05:28 PM.greynotsoold likes this.
