my advice to anyone wanting to compete is learn the basics first. Jab, right, basic defense, movement and such. Emphasize the work and need for a good jab most. After they have learned the basics, having taught him to control a fight with a jab and slight moves it comes to this. Learn not to be hit and then to hit. ala counterpunching. The art is dieing with most of the old trainers. I was trained well in counterpunching except I would force my opponent to throw with constant pressure. They react to me, but I have a plan to work off of them. If you want insight I will offer it to you. But try this, you will progress in the amatuers much faster..........Rockin'

When i'm sparring i like to use a hard fast jab from the outside to see how my opponents reflexes are and what style he uses. I am 6' tall but i do use the Cus D'amato peek a boo style. I cover my face with my gloves just below my eyes and move in quick at a low crouch. I like to plant one foot between my opponents legs and come across with hooks for Knockout punches, not in sparring of course. I try to work on three punch combo's when sparring, see which punch opens up so i can decide which punch to throw next in a real fight. This style works better with a shorter guy like Mike Tyson but its actually working pretty good for me against heavier opponents. Head movement is very important to me, between that and the jab are my top priorities.

5'11 1/2" on all of the records, but eveyone that has seen him in person says he is really 5'9".

Nothin' but some good ole' throwback phonebooth fightin' ala Ray Mancini , Wayne Mcullough, Danny "Kid Dynamite" Romero.... Don't mistake it for that B.S. I hit you-you hit me crap, we love to shoot from all types of angles and give lots of lateral movement, never stayin' in front of the opponent. Sad to say though my jab is crap, 'cause I knew and believed in my speed and power. Man just talkin' about it makes me reminisce the good times. Counterpunching didn't come naturally to me, something that I had to work on and I got pretty decent with it.

I stand conventional, with my right hand by my ear and my left hand just below my chin

i get aggressive when my instinct takes over, but in round one when the bell rings, I get in the middle and get respect with my left jab, moving in a circle while moving my head side to side, keeping a good couple of ft between me and my guy. i keep an eye on my opponents midsection, since all punches come from the feet first, i never miss a beat. If a guy lunges at me with a left hook, I'll see it coming a mile away..I always back up in time to be able to counter with a left jab at the least. If he jabs at me, I look to leap in with a left hook, unless it's a southpaw, then I duck and throw a right hook to the body then a left hook upstairs. The best chance a southpaw has at getting over on me is that straght left hand, thats why I always keep my right hand by my ear so if that punch gets thrown I can block it or catch it easily. If someone tries to close in and stalk me down, when I get near a corner I just pop the jab and right hand (if I see an opening for the right hand) and it backs up the guy every time, or at least allows me to get outta the danger zone..gotta get that jab respect early for him to back up on demand like this, getting jab respect early is so important for me.

when im sparring i dont throw hooks at all unless someone tries to hit me with a hook, normally i keep my guy at a distance and smack em with my left jab, and adapt to what he does. if he tries to hurt me (hooks, full power shots in general) I focus on circling and keeping my head in motion, setup with the left jab and 9 times out of 10 I'll land a right hook to the body after that jab lands. this is normally how I always go into any kind of boxing match because i have respect for myself, consider myself somewhat intelligent and don't go in there looking to lose brain cells. I don't wanna be the guy making threads on here about having headaches after taking a large shot while sparring, so I always stay cautious in there...

you gotta take care of yourself in that ring if you wanna be the same person 20 years from now, that's the way i see it,hence my counterpunch style.
