Water Bottles in the corner: Why do they tape water bottles?

This is the one thing i never understood. Why is it in the corner, the water bottle are taped up? I understand taping it up if it were glass, but corner men even tape up the gatorade water bottles. Or a regular water bottle. Why is that? Tradition? Rules? Any thoughts?

I do it for grip, so it's easier to handle. Also, I think if you are doing a televised fight, there are some products you cannot give free advertisment to. So if the fight has some sponsor and you show up with a Gatoraid bottle, they won't allow it.

That's what i suspected. But even the clear plastic bottles they tape up? For grip perhaps?

For grip. May not seem like a big deal, but when you only get one minute between rounds you don't want to lose any time picking up a water bottle that slipped out of your vaseline covered hands.
