    Working in the run

    Hi guys. I have just started boxing training and wanted to know from some more experienced folks about running. I have heard that someone who is training should run every day, but I have also heard that someone should run only 2 or 3 days a week. Further, I have heard that HIIT (or some sort of interval training run) is better and yet I have heard that long-duration steady runs are better. What do you guys think?

    my advice, run 5x/week about 5-7 miles each time...

      That's quite a bit. Don't you wear out quickly when pushing in that hard? I mean, when you add in the boxing routine and muscle stuff.

        thats what it takes to be of the elite caliber level. 5+ miles 5-6 days a week of just steady running. You gotta understand there are different types of endurance. think of it like this with boxing. the long distance type running would be good for just moving around the ring, your boxing conditioning and training would be for being elusive and defending which would require more energy because of tensing up for shots and having to evade, and then the hiit would be for high level short time output when you throw a flurry and then step back to recover. you gotta train all 3 levels. just because you could run 10 miles doesnt mean you could last 5 rounds in the ring effectively. running and hiit will greatly increase your cardio vascular system but you still have to do everything else. it all adds up when you step into the ring. do your long distnace 3+ miles 4-6 times a week. do hiit 2-4 times a week and then you got all your other training to do. your going to be tired and sore for about 3 weeks to 6 weeks but once your body adapts to it youll have an unlimited gas tank and youll be able to push the pace like no other.

          Do it all.
          Mix in some longs runs with sprints.

          If you can do it, run everyday. But its up to you about the intensity at which you run.

            Good answers. I have been running for a years now, so the duration/intensity of a run does not worry me. What does worry me is time. How much time per day should I be putting in to all of this? My daily runs usually take about 30-40 minutes. Following that I have M-W-F of arms/abs and T-F-Sa/Su (depending on the night before ) of legs and boxing. These can quickly add themselves up to hours worth of time. I am a college student who also works. Suggestions on that note?

              Buy a heart rate monitor. I got one pretty cheap for about $40 at sears.

              Stay in your target heart rate from 30 min to an hour. This will tell you how long to run.
              THere is no need to run forever, when you can make your heart, lungs and legs stronger in a short amount of time.

                If you just started and havent even sparred or nothing yet, you need to work on sprints. A lot of them. Gym work in between ! Them sprints are serious. The more you do them the better you are in the amateurs! Getting off first and being explosive is a key for now. Sprints help a lot

                  it seems as though youve managed your time well especially for wanting to box and put some serious training time in as well as going to work and school. remember that resting is also a part of training. if you arent getting atleast 8-9 hours of sleep then you may start to suffer or you may never reach your full potential. unfortunately there is only so much time in a day and having to work and go to school on top of trying to condition and train for a sport especially boxing is very time constricting. i hope your friends are the ones you train with hah because it seems like you dont even have time for them. as long as your diet doesnt suck and your getting borderline 7 hours+ then you should be fine.
