nah jk (somewhat ) but anyway my friend who been fighting for a while tells me that a fighter always knows how to control his power...so if it's a new guy just do things you wouldn't do for say a more exprience person. like maybe you should had just prataice on your jab or a combonation you wanted to try out...thats wht i usally do.
Yeah man, it's pretty small gym, we only got 1 ring, 2 trainers, like 8 heavybags, couple of speed bags and double end bags, thats pretty much it. There is a bench press with a bunch of weights and kettle bells, and huge tire with a sledge hammer and thats all. Nothing fancy.

I could go to a bigger gym, but this one is close from my place and i like the guy who trains me, he's good.

Anyway yeah, beleive me the though of going hard on him crossed my mind but then i remembered the first the first time i sparred at a gym when i was a kid, i thought i was a badass and got my ass handed to me by a guy in his 20's.

My jaw has been making that clicking sound when i eat since that day, he caught my 14 years old ass with a bomb when i had my mouth open gasping for air.

Well if it was his first time sparring, what would you expect? Like someone else said, there are two types of newbies, the ones that rush you will wild shots or the ones who are super passive. I know I was the passive guy for quite some time.

Just work with him and try to build up his confidence while you practice your offense. Eventually he'll get over his fear of getting hit and get going. But if he's not going to fight, tell him he's gotta punch back or you won't spar with him. You gotta be nice to the new guys because they're probably real scared and it's nice if someone is willing to work with them.

Hell last thursday it was just jab sparring and I was tenative till I got hit and realized it didn't hurt that bad.
Only 3-4 heavy weights? most nights I'm the only one, granted this isn't a super serious gym either which is just fine for me. (If you plan on going for PhD you don't want to get hit in the head too much.)

I would just stand in front of them with my hands up and let them hit your gloves. Just let them build their confidence. No need to go hard on a beginner.

You gotta be honest. Tell him, "If your just gonna stand there and do nothing, then whats the point of this sparring match?". On the real, I would never want to beat up on someone who doesn't want to fight back, I just don't have that sort of mentality, it isn't in me.

By boxing. Just go by the books; jab to whatever.
