How good is a bike for cardio?

I hate running and would much rather use a bike for my cardio. So I was wondering if there are any major differences between the two?

Say that I'd have to do an extra few miles on a bike to get the same out of doing a run? If you can see what I'm trying to get at?

For example, If I did a 3 mile run, would I have to do 5/6 miles on a bike to get the same out of it? I guess it would depend on intensity.

Does anyone else use a bike for their cardio workout?

Biking sucks. Your not supporting your actual bodyweight so it requires quite a bit less from your cardiovascular system. Calves are pretty well out of the equation there too.

However it is good to mix it up so maybe once a week ride your bike instead but make sure you go hard and try to remain seated to challenge your legs more. And yes, if you bike you should do about double the distance you run.

If you're not competting( just trying to stay in shape) then do whatever you like, some kind of cardio is better than no cardio. But if you do compete, stick to the traditional road work. You don't see Pac Man, Cotto or any boxer doing there cardio on a bike 5 to 6 days a week. Hope this helpz...........

The stairmaster or running for 40 minutes a day is the best for boxers who are competing.

If your just trying to stay in shape, any cardio is good.

Good, but runnin is better. I use my elliptical bike when my legs are sore. You don't exert as much on em wit the bike, hence why runnin is a lil better.

Bikes use different muscles. It's good for cross-training, it will work your heart and lungs but will not help your legs in the same way. I think you have to get away from thinking of miles and start thinking in terms of minutes. The body reacts to the stress you place on it. The stress comes from the intensity and the duration of the activity. Start off doing 30 minutes, then 40 minutes, then 50 minutes and then start to ratchet up the intensity of your workout. If you're training to box you want your body to be able to work hard for 47 minutes. I say 47 and not 36 because the 1 minute rest between rounds does not provide full recuperation. You need to have the energy to finish the 12th round strong.

If you want you could probably -- I'm not a trainer -- use the bike for your endurance training and run sprints as your interval training. The sprints should give you all the leg muscle workout you need. (That plus your sparring, shaddow boxing, heavy bag routine, etc...)

Is there anything that makes running a little less boring other than an iPod?

I suppose I could do some running, but I always get bored after a while and the bike seems like an easy way out.

join a fitness gym as backup where there are treadmills and hot girls attend, most of them always have ****ing bodies. that way you can do your running the noon, and go to boxing in the evening.
