getting some cleto gloves, figured I'd snag a new pair of shoes as my EL's are falling apart behind the right heel. the shoes I have seem to be for an outboxer type. I'm more of an infighter..any shoe suggestions would help me out. I know lots of people with experience post here so this is why I'm posting this here. Figured someone here might know an infighter who loves his new shoes, or something. Later

I'm an infighter. I use the lo-top EL's. A couple of guys at my gym use wrestling shoes; wrestling shoes are built to drive, boxing shoes are built to pivot.
My favorite training shoes are still my Chuck Taylors. Good grip, comfortable shoe, flat sole.
If you're 6'4", why would you infight? I mean, I'm 5'9" and I infight guys your height. If were your size I'd work the jab. What do you weigh? -

Serious question, serious answer. I'm an infighter and I love my shoes. I'm on my second pair. IMO, you have the best shoes for close work.
And my question about the infighting at your height was serious. If there are infighters your height, I want to know about it. I go 170, fight middleweight, and have gone up against guys 6'3", 6'4", and they have all been jab artists. Granted, they're 100 lbs. lighter than you, but why not, with your reach, use the jab?Comment

Also- I do work the jab, when applicable..it's my best punch, but when other heavyweights come around to spar I remember going up against a guy once who was like 6 ft 6 (with longer arms than me), and I was trying to stay at long-midrange and box and I kept getting tagged by his cross. It was one of my first spars...I kept trying to push him off me when he'd get close. Total waste of energy. So in the 3rd I just came out and got close, and it completely nullified his cross because he couldn't get full extension. He lacked an uppercut so I just stayed close to him and kept throwing combinations, body to head over and over...he pulled a 'no mas' after I lead with a cross and landed a solid hook on the top of his head.. I didn't knock him down though, I just landed that hook and then stepped in with a jab and he tapped his gloves.Comment

If I had the reach to work a really long jab, I'd go with a full-length boot and do a lot of quick attacks and reverses. I'd stay the hell out of the "phone booth," as we call it at my gym.Comment

And don't sweat calling me a *****. Happens more often than you'd think. The last time it was a kid at my gym who called me "grandpa" in the same breath. I strapped on a pair of 16's and gave him a quick lesson in old age and guile.

Back when I regularly attended that gym, I used to only stay on the outside if I was going up against an infighter way shorter than me. I have about a 77 inch wingspan. I know that's not short arms...but it's weird, I have power on the inside. Definately more power than I have on the outside. The cross is my only comparable punch unless I step in with the jab, something I don't like to really do if I'm trying to stay on the outside. It's nice to throw some bull**** jabs and then step in with a big one, but if you constantly are jabbing a guy your height and he has a good cross, you'll eventually get countered. With taller HW's, or HW's that have better long range extension than me, it's best to just step in and rake the body, get that guard down and toss a few big ones upstairs and get some chin tickle action going on.

I went with these due to price...
The gloves were like 140, (reyes training, lace up style 16's) these shoes were only 55. I got a box of the cheap Top Contender gauze, it's only 24.99 for 50 of them. I bet the gauze is going to be ****, oh well. Never tried the TC gauzeComment
