They are trying to react to what you are doing. So pretend you are going to do something, and then be ready and counter them when they make their move.
It's difficult, but it's just another one of those things that takes practice.
ive always struggled with them,
the kind that do NOTHING but counter.
Counter-punchers are a nightmare style for me as well. Well, not just any counter-puncher, the good ones are the pain in the @ss to deal with.
Like someone had already mentioned and I'm just gonna reiterate what he already said A) You can let them lead and then counter 'em B) You really gotta work the feints and jabs C) throw in combinations and not just one at a time, an effective counter-puncher will have their opponent throwing at a time, that's the kind of fight they want.
The best gameplan for me against counter punchers are B and C.
if he's faster and sharper then me id cut off the ring and keep a tight guard pushing the pace with my jab to get to the inside. once i back him up id fight on the inside with short compact punches. right short hook to the body followed by a quick slip to my right along with a right uppercut. id work off the inside too by pushing off to make just far enough out of inside range to throw a fast 212 to bring up the gloves then shuffle to the left or right and go to the body. effective compact punches on the inside and setting up a shuffle combination would be my bread and butter for that situation.
Keep a real tight guard and apply a lot of pressure. Most of the less polished counter punchers are not nearly as capable of countering their opponent when he is up close and personal. The other consequence is that often times if you begin to effectively "bull” a counter puncher around they will open up trying to keep you away which alleviates the problem.
Keep them off balance with aggression, focus on punching from all angles, + great head movement. If you study all general boxing techniques and learn counters yourself you should know what type of counter you are setting yourself up for when you take certain risk so you can avoid any punishment.
Also keep your gaurds up because your not always going to be in position to move quick enough to avoid a good counter puncher.
Output rate should win the fight for you following the previous guidelines.
Other than that depending on you stamina and power = Brawling always makes for an interesting fight, just don't lose your balance or the counter punsher will make you look the silliest.
I'm no Pro, **** I'm nobody. I did train in boxing for a while but the answer I gave is more from an observers point of view.
If you know that there's a counter coming, and you even know the punch from previous experience, grit your teeth and take it, and then punish him back before he can pull back. Worked for me but i still recommend evading the punch rather than taking it.
