  • Elbow pain

The most common aches and pains in our beloved sport of boxing are usually in the hands, wrists and shoulders. But not me, when I use to be a competitive amateur boxer and my workouts were more intense, my elbows hurt all the time, usually whenever I'd throw the hooks. Has anyone had or have this problem?

The pain usually occurs when I made impact with the bag, I don't recall it hurting during sparring though, maybe during mitts it would hurt too. But, hitting the bag became literally a pain.

It doesn't hurt anymore even when I box, but, it was just weird, because like I said earlier, everyone talks about wrist and hand pain and here I am with my elbows. I wonder if what I was experiencing is what they call tennis elbow.

Can anyone shed some light on this.

thats not really specific. probably need stronger triceps. in my experience, if a muscle hurts boxing: make it stronger.

Sometimes if I catch a particularly nasty body shot on the forearm, it would kinda snap my arm backwards (in a curling motion) very violently which would cause some elbow pain for the rest of the day but other than that, no pain at all. Also, accidentally hyperextending your arm at the elbows on the heavy bag can be a b!tch as well.

ive had this problem, with me it was the muscle
i got a little tendonitus. i couldn't throw anything with force from my left hand
just worked through it till it went away. it could be from over extending your punches too

I got this problem aswell, it happened last week after a particularly heavy bag session, I tend to throw alot of my jabs from the waist and so my elbow takes alot of the strain, the day after that bag session I had a mini bag session just practising my left hooks.

After that I havent been able to throw jabs without my left elbow hurting, its the outside elbow but the pain slightly radiates down the forearm and sometimes even the outer chest area. Im thinking its some kind of variant of the tennis elbow. Taking a rest from any shadowboxing or bag work for the moment until it heals up a bit.

Shadow boxing can cause elbow problems if you lock your elbows out when you throw.

sounds like you over extended that elbow, that's a *****! takes a while to heal too.

Actually, I wasn't over-extending at all, I throw them pretty compact, nice and short. I think it was from the continous pounding.
