    Training/Nutrition Myths

seems like a good idea for a thread.

    I'll throw out a few -
"eating a 'low fat' diet is healthy." - fact is, you need 15% fat. Just the way it goes.

"if you want to get in shape, eat less, exercise more." - this is a fatal combination. The more you train, the more you need to eat. If you're going to eat less, you might as well not train.

"red meat is unhealthy." - bull****. Every great fighter I know of ate or eats red meat. It's one of the most nutritious foods in the world.

"you should abstain from sex before a fight." - eat, sleep, ****, fight. There are some things you can't tell me not to do. I agree that staying out late could be a problem.

"soda is very bad for you." - I don't buy it. Don't have science to back it up, but I think it's bs. Some people say soda doesn't hydrate you, that is DEFINITELY bs.

"If you look fat you should lose weight." - bull****. People come in different shapes and sizes. Fedor is not cut, I highly doubt he's supposed to be any other shape than he is. Anyone seen the pictures of tony galento when he lost weight? Looked gross. Some people are supposed to be big.

"Never lose your temper in a fight." - This one's complicated. Certain styles don't lend themselves well to getting angry. Some do.

"Cutting weight will make you more competitive." - don't do it. Fighting at your natural weight has enormous advantages.

Soda's contain a lot of sugar, that dehydrates u and are of course very fattening. bottom line, no sugary drinks for hydration. same as eating salty foods, also bad for u.

"weight training will make u slow", not true, u can train for the explosiveness and the conditioning of ur muscles, which is pretty tricky to me. Explosiveness of muscles requires less reps but high weights, and conditioning is a lot of reps with low weights. the only thing i can think of right now is a lot of sets.

Low fat diet is a fad term, it's more about WHAT fats you eat.

'Getting in shape' is open to interpretation; if you want to lose fat then yeah, use more than you put in. If you want to be stronger, faster, more durable etc etc then yeah, you have to feed yourself right.

Red meat is indeed healthy, though shouldnt be eaten too much. Many people agree once a week is best (apparently, though it sounds right).

Lowering testosterone levels, increasing endorphion levels etc may affect some peoples performance, may do nothing to others. Also risk hurting yourself, specifically your groin, if you have sex before a fight.

Define 'bad'. And yes, it does dehydrate you. As you said yourself you havent read the science behind it.

Very true, people do have an optimum and genetic size, so some may be stronger and fitter with much higher fat reserves than other competitors eg. Holyfield vs. Bowe.

No, that is a steadfast rule that must be applied constantly. You MUST keep your composure, and fight and behave in a calculated and professional manner. Turning up the heat or persuing a hurt opponent, while similar, must be done cleanly and correctly, running in throwing your arms around is amateurish, foolish and will more often than not, end badly.

Fat is essential, but be careful of what kind of fat you are consuming. Bad fats coming from fried food/junk food is bad, then there are good fats such as olive oil, nuts, etc...
