  • How does tire flipping benefit a boxer

Suddenly all this "spartan workout" is in vogue in recent years w/ combat athletes, but, I just don't get it with the tire flips, unless one is planning to join the World's Strongest Man Competition.

I can see how the sledgehammer excercises can improve on punching power, but tire flips?

If you like to like to grapple your opponents, it is probably a good way to train.

Pavlik does both, and he's got power if nothing else. Obviously it's going to work your arms, shoulders, back and legs. A number of legendary fighters did tough manual labor before and during their careers. Working in mines, as lumberjacks, carrying big blocks of ice up stairs, digging ditches etc. Working in a giant tire flipping factory might take the cake as toughest job though lol.

Someone said Pavlik has power, but a natural puncher has it already and does not necessarily need to flip tyres. It gives you strength and conditioning but punching power is always natural. Anything done in training is to enhance your natural ability through increased fitness, not create the ability! Sledgehammer does not increase punching power either, just conditioning and strength. If Malignaggi started flipping tyres, he may be stronger but won't suddenly be knocking mofo's out is what I am saying!

actually it's a posterior chain builder, but the idea's the same.

Tire flipping makes a lot of sense, especially the drive towards the top, because you're using the same muscles you use in a punch.

The one I never really got was sledgehammer swings. Swinging down might help in a ground and pound situation or a sloppy overhand, but I don't see it in most of the other punches - except for the backswing to reset the hammer. I think swinging a baseball bat or chopping down a tree; any lateral movement, might have more carry-over.

Marquez and many other fighters swear it increases punching power so all you can do is believe them

O believe me, I do sledgehammer at least once a week when I'm in training, just don't see how it works.
