  • is my chin getting weaker?

I started training really hard and got down from 165-140lbs. But the same sparring partners that I used to spar with now seem to hit harder and I'm almost getting knocked out. Does my ability to take punches get weaker as I lose weight. I lost this weight in a matter of like 3-4 months.

Well if you weigh less, and your opponents weigh more, their punches will have a greater effect than what they used to.

Try to get some more strength in your legs, it will give you more grounding.

Are you eating more shots than before?
Have your sparring partners improved significantly over before?
What's your diet like? Are you getting enough nutrients?

I've seen the chin go on some people before after they lost a ton of weight, heck it happened to me. So I think it is possible, especially when people aren't dieting safely. Plus, after you get rocked badly once or twice, it's easy to get rocked again unless you take time off.

I've also seen people lose significant power after losing a bunch of weight as well. My old training buddy walked into the gym his first day at 178. Our first sparring session his right was like an invisible jackhammer - shot out like a bullet and hit hard. I was in the low 200s at the time and it was a bit scary. Over time, with a lot of training he lost a lot of weight. In the low 160s I think he was the most dangerous, still had power but was even quicker with better technique. By the time he hit the low 150s, he didn't hurt me anymore. I moved away after a bit. Now, I believe he fights amateur as low as 135 & is very successful, but it's doubtful he could hurt me like before though.

A good standard to go by is the more you lower your weight the more you have to move around. watch some fly weights then watch some heavy weights. almost all the fighters at my gym is bigger than me,with the exception of one(he is smaller). When i get in the ring with them I am not expected to knock these guys out, i am expected to move after i throw and hold my ground and make them pay when they try to get inside. Why they try to get inside on a guy that is significantly shorter than them i will never know. When you get into a sanctioned fight you will have to fight around your own weight if you can go toe to toe with the big boys you would do fine against someone your weight. The thing that helped me the most was sticking my chin to my chest, before it would float up and i would get tagged hard, now its no big deal. A hard hook will still stun me a moment but not as bad as it was.

Well if anything I got more refined skill wise my shots were more accurate and faster and my cardio was all around better. Except when I do takke those shots they seem to feel a lot harder.
