  • Female Amateur MMA fighter -- boxing q's

I've have minor experience in martial arts-- just a tad over 6 years. It's not much, I know, but I'm looking to broaden my skills. After fighting in KOTC Saturday up in Port Huron (I won second round, but it was a battle!), I really decided I want to try to make something out of this.

I have a great coach that's been boxing since he was 8 and he's well-rounded in jujitsu/wrestling/mma,etc, but I'm wondering how different it'd be to spar [boxing] from a male and a female? Does that make sense? I know there is physical/chemical differences, but would it really make a different?

What are some drills I could do to lean out my arms/make punches quicker? What can I do to get me in the habit of keeping my freakin hands up? It's like when my nerves kick in during a fight, my hands go numb and ****** out and I get popped several times in the face, forget all my stand up training, and have to rely on my ground game to save my butt.

Any tips? I'm 5'8" and fight at 155lb, although I want to cut down to 140-145 weight. Any tips on getting to that weight by June or July? Is eating lean protein and vegetables key?

Hope this makes sense and that I get some serious answers. Thanks!

(Oy, I train in the Toledo, OH area. Anyone know where I can do some smoker boxing fights so I can start learning to use my hands without always having to rely on my jujitsu to save me in my mma fights?)

Hi, please post pics of yourself in a bikini before your questions are answered. Thank you.

P.S. only if you are over 18 years of age that is.

To be honest if you get used to hitting the bag without kicking it then you should naturally start to forget about kicks. You are in a more difficult position as you have to unlearn your mma skills. In training I only do the following

      :Sparring
      :Bag Work
      :Speedball
      :Resistance Training
      :Cardio

Get in the ring with a fast, light puncher and just play around, try not to get hit too often and ask you're trainer what you can do to improve.

As for sparring with a male, to be honest it's probably not a great idea as naturally most guys will hold back against a woman.

something thats helped me with speed/power is my lifting technique. say i'm doing curls, i explode up, hold the weight for a couple of seconds, then slowly return the weight. its works both ur group 1 and group 2 muscles, and since i started lifting this way i've noticed a marked improvement in my speed and power. just be wary of how much weight ur using, its a good idea to start with a lower weight than u normally use to avoid injury. i'd recommend talkin to a personal trainer or something doh, men r built different than women (obviously) and i'm pretty sure u don't want to have biceps the size of cantaloupes so u should prolly check with some1 who knows.

as for keepin ur hands up, we do this drill at my gym for head movement but u can change it up a bit to help u keep ur hands up. the drill we do is u stand on a square and ur partner stands across from u, u keep ur hands down by ur waist and ur partner throws punches at u, u can move anything but ur hands and legs to avoid the punches (every time u move ur legs/hands its 10 pushups). i guess u could do the same thing but with ur hands up.

i've had to spar women a couple of times and basically just worked on my defence (slips, rolls, footwork) and throwing the occasional jab. i'm not sexist or nething i've just got a mental block about hitting girls.
