  • Question about stance

Hey guys, I have a problem with what stan i use use or fight with.

Ive been doing boxing for 7 months now, and I have fought once as a amateur. But i dont know if I should stay as a south paw or a orthodox.

Im natutally right handed, but I do stuff with my left hand too.

The problem I have is that, when I go right handed and cant run combinations as fast or move as fast as I do as a southpaw. But as a righty I get alot of leverage for my power punches, specially the straight right hand.

As a southpaw tho, I seem way faster and My combinations runs smoother and cleaner. And my defense is better.

I prefer to go rigthy because it seems like, I hit harder as a righty.

What you guys think will help me solve this problem!!!

It comes down to what you feel the more comfortable with.

I'm a natural right hander and i fight as a southpaw, i can punch with both hands so that wasnt my problem, when i started boxing at 14-15 i was training as an orthodox fighter, but i just went southpaw a lot. One day one of the trainers saw me hitting the bag from the southpaw stance and told me i should just chose if i wanted to fight southpaw or orthodox.

I eventually stuck to just fighting as a leftie, to me it just feels like my combinations are much more fluid at it feels natural even tough i am a right hander.

You really need to choose one and get your chops down. If you really are somewhat more comfortable in an orthodox stance, you should train that and quit switching back to Southpaw. You need to dedicate yourself to a stance and practice it or you will be sub-par at both. Pick one, get your poop together and explore the other once you feel completely comfortable with one.

A fighter who can shift stances and fight in both orthodox and southpaw is intimidating. A fighter who switches stances because he or she lacks a full range of boxing skills in a single stance is just considered lazy. Stick to your chosen stance till you are a competent fighter.

my right hand is my power hand. my left hand is not strong. so my jab is stronger and the combo are better fighting southpaw but no power on my left so i feel more comfotable southpaw than orthodox

7 months of training and you got a fight? Damn, they threw you in the mix like that huh?

Stance? Learn how to fight orthodox. They call it "orthodox" for a reason. Fight orthodox, that's my opinion anyways.

If you are right handed you should fight that way. If you get into trouble in a fight, your instincts will be better if you fight orthodox since you're a natural right hander.

If you are really tempted to go lefty, maybe just practice fighting the last 30 seconds of a round that way with flash and maybe you can "steal" some of the close rounds like Ali used to do.
