My first few amateur fights headguards were not compulsory so I didnt war one. When I started to wear them it felt like my head was made a bigger and easier target to hit.
But you need them for sparring, mainly to prevent cuts from head clashes more than anything else. If you do turn pro maybe you will find slipping punches easier if you are used to a headguard. Important to get one that fits properly without covering the eyes.

Whoever thinks amateur boxing shouldnt have headguards are idiots! YOUR NOT GETTING PAID AND BY YOU GETTING YOUR **** BLEW IN WITHOUT A HEADGEAR IS NOTHING BUT A BETTER SHOW FOR THE PEOPLE WATCHING. seriously you guys need to lay off the testosterone pills and start thinking about your health instead of trying to look cool infront of people. If headgear is so bad how come I never EVER seen a pro in recent years spar without one? oh and to the **** bag that said amateur boxing was going to get rid of headgear, hey dip**** amateur boxing matches get stopped the second a little cut or decent amount of blood is shown, so it would be a oxymoron for them to get rid of something that keeps the fighters in the fight. jesus sometimes I think some of these people on here might already be punch drunk.

I think in one of my sparring videos I had to change headgear cause I couldn't see nothing.haha.

I wish I could find the ol' school headgear that has more vision.

If you got the money, get some top ten headgear...

                    from totiro-usa.com

Dunno if you can tell from the pic, but it's not restrictive to vision at all... of course it hardly protects too, but at least wearing it will keep other people at the gym off your back.

I have the same problem with seeing when I crouch down, I keep my head and eyes up but it's like a huge blind spot some times and I hate it. Not to mention that if it's a busy day the headgear is still damp from the guy before me...

I think my next investment in boxing is going to be my own head gear.
