I see that hooks are probably the most thought about and asked about punches on here, although if I trained I would prefer that my students would have focused more on their jab. So, to clear any confusion for people who had not been in the sport for long I will try my best to describe the proper technique in hook throwing.
First of all, hook is probably one of the most varied punches in the sport(although you can throw every punch in many different ways), every trainer that I worked with taught me how to throw a hook in a different manner, that is up until I realized that if you obey a few simple boxing principles you can throw it any way you want.
1)So, first of all, you have to start your punch off the floor, your twist your foot, then your hip, then your waist and only then you start throwing the punch.
2)Your elbow must be a little higher then your fist in the ending point of the punch when you tighten up your muscle(I hope by now you realize that you have to throw your punches with your arms relazed and your wrists locked, but not tightened)
3)You can throw your hooks with your fists vertically(with palm facing you) or horizontally. Horizontal hooks are good to throw in combination with a jab, since they are much longer and more accurate punches. Vertical hooks are good in close and mid distance and you better throw your body hooks like that as well. You can also twist into them much more and as such they are more powerful usually.
This is all that comes to mind right from the bat, but feel free to either add information or ask me questions
