    I keep eating jabs!!!

I am 41 and took up boxing to get in shape, which I did. Now I am sparring more and more but I am not getting better. Well, i am getting better at offense but my defense sucks. No matter how much I move my head I get hit with jabs and it backs me up. Last night I sparred a big strong 20 year old and his jabs were killing me.

I feel like I'm not getting the right training, I'm just getting thrown in there to get hit and learn by trial and error, but as a 41 year old father of two, there might be a better way to learn.

    Pleas help.

Hows your fitness? A 41 year old sparring a 20 year old... all the advantages seem to be with the 20 year old.

The art of boxing... keep your head and legs moving. I used to box and represented England as a school boy.

    Do you enjoy the training?

the key is to relax, that is the hardest thing to learn in boxing. but when you learn to relax then you will see the jab coming, now mind you will not be able to get away from every jab but you will see them coming so you can try to time it with a counter or so you can jab with him which sometimes takes your opponents jab away from him. (i had well over 200 am fights, born in Cuba and that is me in my av)

        what he said ^^^^

make sure your right hand is always up by the side of your face... and when your relaxed and you see them coming... try to paw the jabs away with your right hand.. or deflect them.. you can also move your head while your deflecting them

also, if you do see a slow jab coming... try to counter over top of the jab with your right hand... this will make him think twice.

            Block and Parry
            Slip
            Duck
            Bob

Or...If you're an offensive fighter...COUNTER. He jabs you and then **** ****, a 1-2 counter. My defence sucks, i'm quite clearly an offensive fighter. I can slip and duck well but I can't block and parry for **** but when I feel as if i'm eating too many jabs I send a left, right, left, right rapidly. They don't have much power, I send them with speed, not power, but what that does, without fail, is fluster them. They back up, they cover up, the put their head down then you eat them. Right hook to the head, if they're covering up go for the body! People always go for the head, have you ever taken a real body shot? They hurt a hell of a lot more, aim for the Solar Plexus (but this is very hard to hit because of their guard)/their floating rib/their side (don't know the biological term, sorry).

i'm pretty sure someone already said this but just in case, you can use the palm of your right hand(orthodox vs orthodox) to catch your opponents jab. not reach out for it or paw at it but to just catch it. ask someone to throw just jabs at you and work on that. if you can't master the palm trick just keep a high, tight guard.
