I use to hit things a lot when I was a kid, my knuckles are real tough now, but it's probably because I bruised or fractured them so much they healed back stronger. I wouldn't recommend it though, when you get older it may effect you.
it'll send calcium deposits to the knuckles and make them stronger. I suppose hitting a wall would be like hitting a really heavy, immovable heavybag in terms of making your punches harder but you'll never really be able to punch a hard wall all out without breaking your hand or the wall (ala drywall). It would eventually let you hit somebody ungloved harder without having to worry about it hurting as much.
hitting anything without proper wraps isnt smart. it may add strength in some areas, but itll do one thing also... cause damage, perminent possibly..
i punched many walls, and holes in walls, and its only done bad bad things for my hand and wrists. hands are valuable, wrists as well, dont risk ****in them up
hitting walls is an incredibly ****** training. it is documented of having given people severe arthritis and nerve damage.
proper conditioning takes time, but will not deform your hands. proper conditioning leaves your hands looking normal, except the gradually become extremely strong over years. actually, it doesnt take very long for your hands to increase in durability.
in proper conditioning, you start by hitting, very gently, onto bags specifically prepared for conditioning. the early levels generally use mung bean as a filler. some traditions include specific medecinal herbs inside the conditioning bag. also, there is a medicinal liquid that you have to soak your hands in after the practice.
another important point, is that u never want to try to hit the bag very hard. you let your hand fall onto it using only gravity.
the iron hand conditioning is not a myth. just many people do not know of the practice. and, any proper practice of it will not affect the way your hands look or give u health problems.
that is one way.
kostya tszyu swears by the practice and has mentioned practicing iron fist for over 7 years.
only practice if u have been taught by a knowledgeable teacher.
Hiting walls is nothing you should start out with.
Like J said you can use the chinese bags. The Kung Fu Liniment is very importent for your hands to recover. There are a lot of recipiese for those liniments and ointments. If you have no chinese drugstore around or don't care about making your own, you can just order stuff like "Dit Da Jow Wing Lam", or "Dit Da Jow" etc.
Besides bags and makiwaras there are those bags that hang on walls used in wing chun. I like more conditioning on trees but I rather do palmstrikes. If you do palmstrikes on walls the house will start to shake and your neighbors will think there was an earthquake. But if you want to condition your knuckles than use trees with a softertrunk or use a phonebook inbetween. After some time start removing pages from the phonebook until you reach the trunk of the tree by that time your knuckles should be conditioned well. Also don`t forget to drink sojamilk after training for the calcium supply to your body.
