  • Footwork question

Can someone explain me exactly how u balance and where u put ur weight on ur foot when jabbing, crossing, hooking and uppercutting?
I mean when i want to perform a left jab my weight is mostly on my back right foot and when the left jab comes forward i shift my weight same time to the front lead foot, is this correct? What about the hook?

It's different for lots of people, some guys are weird and unorthodox.

The left jab's foot placement and pushoff changes, depending on whether or not you are moving laterally or coming forward....ie throwing defensive jabs, or offensive style jabs.

I'll assume you mean coming forward, like you want to hurt someone with a jab ala Liston

Jab, pushoff with back foot, lunge into the punch with your chin down. Both hands up, as soon as your jab lands, return the glove to your face with elbows in. My jab hand stays open if I'm not jabbing when it's protecting my face- , when I jab I turn it all the way over and into a fist. That's how you throw a nice, snappy jab....

Hook, weight is on your lead foot and it should turn clockwise(like a smoker putting out a cig on the ground.) as you deliver the punch. Keep your left hand in front of your left ear if you are moving your head left for any kind of positioning, bad, bad habit to not do this unless you want to kiss canvas like Holt did when he boxed Torres the first time. Aside from the power coming from your legs the most important thing about the hook is not to slap with it. I see guys slapping with their hooks and it's just disgusting, (in the gym.) Make sure your elbow has a nice 90 degreeish angle, give or take a little bit depending on range.

How long would you like the response to be, 80,000 words? Get Joe Frazier's book, Box Like The Pros. It might be about that long.

the key is center of gravity, most people (boxers) have different (uniqe) centering in which they have their best balance and shot power and thier ability to move around with that center, thats why boxers have unique styles, this is were your style comes from... thats what i have been tought, and what i have come to understand with time as i went along.. without it, you wont be able to box at your best..

some people here will laugh at me simply because they dont know anything about the fight game, some will laugh at me simply because they think they know better, but there are some who cant agree more with me and they are the ones you should listen to.
