well to be honest I've always wanted to take up the sport as a hobby but not a lifestyle. I do enjoy and have much respect for boxers and boxing in general. And also they only teach you techniques and real boxing basics in ordewr to get in shape, I'm not going in there to jump right in the ring and get messed up! lol thats for clowns.

in boxing gyms , people are extremly comitted to boxing as a sport and the lifestyle, you will look a bit foolish if you come and pay more atention to u lousing weights rather than learning the basics and technqiue and form,

you mus like boxing and want to improve as a boxer, in order to join a boxing gym, because u cud soon be in the ring with people desprate to make it as an amature trying to knock your head off ,

if you wanna just louse weight for toning, cut down on your eating and do some running and lots of running,

however i cud be wrong btw, if you do like boxing ect...then just go and it will be great

Thanks for the advice, i was actually planning on going every day but I definitely could see myself burning out. I am look to do at least 3 to 4 days a week... maybe every other day.

As far as running is concerned a 20 minute jog sounds like the plan! thanks you!

How many in your gym are fighters and how many are just there for fitness, self defence, fun etc? even in the top pro gyms there are plenty of white collar guys who just box to let off a bit of steam or whatever, and a good trainer knows the difference, and no-one will try to knock your newbie head off unless their a total arsehole and an idiot who will never make it in boxing.

OP in terms of running, a 20 minute to half hour jog 3 times a week is perfect for beginners, you can up it to 4 times, start doing interval running etc when you start sparring and you feel like you need the extra fitness. My advice? dont take it too seriously too quickly, start training once or twice a week, get the basics down and grow your lovve for the sport, dont force yourself into the gym 4/5 times a week cos thats what some other guy does, you'll burn yourself out and lose interest pretty quickly, i've seen it happen loads of times.

95%+ of the people (atleast in the gyms I've been to), are there for fitness and a bit of learning the sport for defence and hobby. The cost is pretty good compared to fitness clubs. They should never feel in the way or that they don't belong.

From my experience, it is a symbiotic relationship of sorts between them and the fighters. In our gym, those folks not there to fight per se, but to get fit and benefit from the experience, are helping keep the doors open and paying the costs allowing those wishing to travel and become serious fighters...actually happen.

So if you are a fighter, take a little time after the cardio workouts and exercises, and grab a new person and help him/her out a bit with the jab, the footwork...spend a few mins on the bag. I bet he/she will appreciate it. As you should be grateful for them. They are financing your dreams and aspirations.

well done in joining this forum and for going to a boxing gym!

I pulled 3 of my mates out of Fitness First last year. they had nice big muscles but absolutely no air in their lungs and now power coming from their big guns haha. They could not last more then 2 rounds one on one with the trainer. After 2 months they could go 6-10 rounds depending...If you like doing weights then do boxing purely to give your heart a great pump and to build stamina. At 27 you need to exercise the heart regularly already with boxing, interval running exercises (up hill, sprint etc) or even power sets/drop sets in the weights room.
Normal road work will not cut this.

            Good luck bro
