Incidentally, women would be a lot less tight if they relaxed, and didn't try to fight you off, when you force yourself on them. That's admittedly not a fixable problem for you though...

Being tight during shadowboxing is a technique thing, and has nothing to do with whether you do pushups or bench presses. 99 boxers out of 100 are too tight, or could at least be even more loose. The newer you are, the tighter you're likely to be. This is something you work on while you're in the gym, not doing something, anything, else has no effect on this.
It's like getting told to stop running because your footwork is bad - it makes no sense, and stems from ignorance/arrogance. Blaming a problem on something unrelated is a cop out.
Thanks punchdrunk. This was the advice I was looking for. I'll continue my bodyweight exercises, and will just work extra hard on my technique at home and in the gym. Karma for you.

Your mom used to be tight, barndog - but that was before she had you.

Anyway, this tightness. It'll flee. You wouldn't be the first boxer to feel tense when someone is directly looking over your shoulder. It's always natural to feel conscious of what you're doing. I have no advice how to combat it.. other than try and relax and feel more comfortable in your surroundings. Try and block everything out, other than you and task in hand.

I got told to relax a few times too but with experience now I feel like my relaxation is one of my biggest assets in the ring, It will come for you too.

Just consciously relax your muscles before shadow boxing, or bagwork, you will probably feel your shoulders drop, your elbows closer to your body. You need to try and visualise your muscles in a relaxed state and try to maintain it. You might feel more pliable and able to slip and move from the trunk more and head movement will be easier too.
After practising this shadow boxing and on the bag, try it sparring and see if it works for you and see if you notice any difference. Better yet video yourself or/and post it here.

Yeah I've noticed I'm much more relaxed when I'm on the bag than when I am shadowboxing. I'll work on it all though. Thanks for the advice, trrmo.

I'll try to film myself soon on the bag and shadowboxing so you can see what I mean.

if you want...do some calenstetics or streach to loosen your body up some. usally when i shadowbox i am a little tighter but when i spar and hit the hevey bag i feel loose.
