Hmmmm.. if i came off like i was so confident its actually the other way around.

He's telling me how he trained with buster douglass and ray mercer and done good with them.. So I'm automatically thinking that his Pro experience is so far vast beyond any level I have at the moment.

I was asking what it should look like because I wanted to know if I should be more confident... because at the moment I'm thinking he's just going to take it easy with me and whatever because I don't match up or somethin.

Thats why I asked should i expect to do good or just get taught a lesson.

Definitely no ****iness if thats what some of you assumed.

and this is no plan to beat someone up... But I don't wanna look like a Super Chump either. I would like to do good against someone more experienced than me. it would make me feel good.

i wouldn't go around giving out the names of the pros you're sparring with. everyone i've talked with has told me that both the amateur and the pro can get in trouble for sparring with each other (whether that means fines, or suspensions, or a revoked license i don't know).

not sure if this is just another myth, but i've been told this by a number of people including ex-pros and trainers. so just heads up.

Hmm.. never heard of that but ok...

Makes a lil sense if ya think about it though... and thats why ya don't hear of many AM's sparring with pro's when they are Top Am's in interviews or just table talk.

        Might not be a myth.

I was just joking anyway. Take it as it is. Go in there as if it's anyone else. He's more experienced than you, in bouts AND in sparring i'm sure. He'll set a pace and allow you to turn it up or tone it down i'm sure. He'll have been in alot of gyms before, unless he's a complete ****, he'll be just fine. Just go in, try and learn and enjoy yourself.

I sparred with a visiting pro, my two friends had gone light and showed him alot of respect. The pro's coach was fed up with them not stepping up and told me to go for it. I went straight ahead and didn't *****-foot around. One lucky shot later and i've bust his nose. Straight away, i **** myself that he might lose his temper and put me in hospital. Instead - he laughed, and we carried on till the bell.

Actually I heard about this just yesterday. One of the fighters at my gym is turning Pro on Thursday (having his debut fight), and the trainer told me that he won't be able to hit any of the amateurs in sparring anymore. I think professionals and amateurs can spar, but the professional is not allowed to land a punch on the amateur.

If he is as experienced as you say, then he would know to take it light with for one, an amature, and two someone who is much less experienced.

I've sparred with many different caliber fighters. Two world champions actually. I usually spar with new guys down in the gym, because there is no one my caliber down there. I take it easy on them all, however if I noticed they are comming in with something to prove and trying to take my head off, I will be quick to slow them down.

I wouldn't go in there and be worried about how you are gonna do, how he is gonna do, what people are gonna think, and all of that bull****. Go in there and spar just as it is any other sparring session.

                Work.

The professional simply works on head movement, parrying, slipping, etc during the sparring session. Our gym does this a lot in fact.

just do the best you can. never expect to take a whoopin. always make an effort to do your best, and you may surprise yourself.

on the other hand, expect him to be very, very tough so that you are mentally prepared. better to be overprepared than under. if you are overmatched, he will work with you, unless he's just an *******. if thats the case, dont spar him. assuming he is cool just show respect and he will return it. otherwise, if you are overly aggressive and come out bombing, he may be tempted to check you with some big shots.

as far as the matchup- you should run all of your sparring by your trainer. thats what ive done. i just put total faith in him and let him match me up accordingly. that way you dont waste your time with bums that don't challenge you and give you false confidence, and also you wont wind up accidently sparring *******s like former pro heavyweight contender James "The Hammer" Butler (who was later convicted of killing Max Kellerman's brother , Sam). he was based in NYC and used to lure smaller fighters into sparring with him, just so he could purposely knock them out cold (im talking naive boxers with no fights under their belts, too). he was a real piece of sh%t.

                    anyway, good luck bro. cheers!
