  • I need some answers about Golden Gloves

I have been training with a partner but havent been training in a gym. I am about to get started at a gym and my goal is to fight in a Golden Gloves tournament in February. I am 29 years old and I started late in the fight game but I have always wanted to fight in the GG. However, I go on the website and I cant find basic info about the tournament. Like how do I go about getting signed up or what are the requirements? Are there different divisions and age groups and all that ? Do you have to go through phyicals and all that stuff ? Are the novice divisions or anything ? The tournament I want to fight in is in Ft. Worth, Texas. So any info would be appreciated....thanks

if your joinging a gym then there should be a trainer who knows whatever you need, even the small gyms have had guys go through the gloves.

I was going to fight in the golden gloves last year but didnt get a
chance to but here's the rundown on what you need to fight:

      1. join a gym and train for atleast 2 months you will need it. I trained
for 1 month and thought I was ready......... I wasnt, they put me in the ring to spar and I got my ass kicked.

      2. you need a certified trainer willing to take you to the fight or be there to work your corner, or else you cant fight.

      3. once you get there you will have to show 2 forms of identification and a recent physical (birth certificate, I.D).

      4. then you will buy a boxing passport for 35 dollars, it lasts one year.

      5. a tank top, some shorts, and shoes and your ready to fight (dont forget
your mouth piece) they supply headgear and, gloves

Appreciate it Brooklyn kid. The gym I am going to join, I know they have fighters there that fight in the GG. I was just wanting some answers before I went through this whole process. I am 29 now and have always wanted to get in the ring and always wanted to fight in the GG tournament, but only now I have I really pushed forward with it. I will be able to train about 4 1/2 months for it. I just wanted to make sure I wasnt too old, and I wanted to make sure that there was a novice division, since I am new to the game. I also didnt know if there was a big fee that you had to pay or anything and if you had to have a full blown physical or anything.

                Thornton,

These are the people who run the Amateur association in your area:
                http://www.missshirley-mouthpiece.org/

In the Houston Golden Gloves there is an "All Comers" division for fighters with no fights, Sub-Novice for fighters with 1-4 fights, and Novice for 5-10 fights.

Agree with other posts that it's best to join a club, but you also may fight "Unattached" and get your buddy or beg someone there to work your corner.

You will need to get your passbook. Also beware that often applications for the tournament are cut off weeks in advance so get registered early.
