Pain After Skipping

      On saturday afternoon I felt ok and wanted to do a quick skipping session before an abs workout but after 1 minute I had to stop because of the pain in my legs. For the next 30mins I basically couldn't walk... It was agony! Then after another 30mins I felt a bit better and ended going out to the pub that night.

      I went to bed about 1am and awoke at 3am with lots of pain in my legs, lay in bed for a while then got out and took some Ibuprofen and managed to fall asleep at 4.30am... I got up at 1pm and felt much better. I usually go to the boxing gym on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays but decided to miss it yesterday (Mon) to give my legs some healing time.

      Have any of you had this before? I heard that I should give myself 3 days rest between skipping since my legs are not used to it as skipping probably uses different muscles than I normally train.

      Everyone and I mean EVERYONE experiences what you did after their first time in the gym and that first skipping session. Stories of hobbling around because it hurts to walk are not uncommon.

      Jumping rope is a very intense exercise and jumping right into a 30 min session is going to leave your calves sore for days.

      There is nothing quite like the chuckle I get from new guys hobbling into the gym the day after their first time skipping rope.

      If there was only one exercise you could do to prepare for a fight, I would pick rope work 100% of the time. Strengthens legs, works cardo, strengthens shoulder, builds coordination, its fun. Simply a great tool.

        I am personally an advocate of do what ever you have fun doing. Create a routine and be creative. There is no wrong way to skip, just ways that are less fun.

            Skipping rope really burns the calves the first time you do it, I remember it well, was in the exact same pain as you described even though I was relatively fit. Personally my favourite is burpees though, they really are a step up in intensity

              Dio, do you have an amazing amount of muscle? im 178 cm and 71 kg and I got FAT

                Yeh im pretty well built. The height and weight I gave are accurate, but the BF percentage was a guess... However I have little fat on my body, only a bit around the mid-section but I can still see my abs!

                      you should probably skip in a boxing ring, or a mat.

                      i specifically use this:

                      it made a big difference between skipping in the hard gym floor, and using the mat.

                      i dont get shin splints as much anymore.
