I lead with the uppercut when I'm practicing blocking punches with my face

Never throw an uppercut from outside or long range especially as a first punch. You're just asking to be brutally knocked out cold. Lopez and Marquez can do it because they're amazing, but don't try it. It's much too easy to counter and is easily seen if you try it from long range.
Look at Chuck Lidell vs Rashad evans to see what a right uppercut lead can get you (in combination with left hand down and chin lifted!).

If you're new learn the punches first, then put them together.
