I was just getting weary of it and wanted to see what some people thought... I do go to the gym... and my brother is amazing on the pads.. I've showed him everything...

He really just makes up a new 6-10 punch combination like everyday and we constantly do that.. then reflex counters... then medicing ball to the stomach as i dance...then back to pads and double end bag switching.

This is after intense double end bag for 8-10... 400 pound tire and sledge hammer... speed bag 6 rounds.. heavy bag 4 rounds... body bag 4 rounds... and all the other regular stuff...

        EXCEPT jumping rope...

dude im happy you do all the hard training, but nothing makes up for sparring. Unless your at mayweathers level and you have already learnt all you need to know, you need to spar. Sparring is the only way to learn in a fight like situation. anyone can hit pads but pads dont hit back, you need punches coming your way from all sorts of dudes, heavier, lighter, taller, shorter. its the only way to learn.

Yea but like i said that was when i was less skilled... and obviously with other sub-novices back in jersey.

But i guess it isn't a huge difference since I've gotten better as my competition has also...

I understand how you could say that. Maybe its the same. no biggie then... guess i shouldn't be worried.. thanx.

I got a question for you guys (or others with experience). Mikkel Kessler didn't spar 2-3 weeks leading up to his fight with Joe Calzaghe. I have no idea how much and in what way that might have lessened his performance. Can you weigh in on the issue?

              Thank you.

Well, it didn't help him, that's for sure. He shouldn't be sparring too hard, if at all, in the final week, but IMO the two weeks before that, are the most important ones for sparring, both sharpness- and conditioning wise.

Don't know if he would have won if things were different, then again, no one else could know either.

Nigel Benn used to do very little sparring. Him and his trainers believed that it was best to keep it all for the ring. (One of them famously said that he was n't getting paid to be hit training.) Personally I think it is what ever works for you.

                  Good luck

People not sparring before a fight(Big pro fights) is fine. Because they have been in training camp for 4-8 weeks usually with sparring. Taking the last week or two off is not ver uncommon.

However, he hasn't had ANY sparring since his last fight, and without a trainer, who knows how well he has been training. Training yourself is never a good idea.

Going into a fight without sparring for a long period of time is not something I would suggest. Your timing will be extreemly off, and you'll get fustrated, and start making more mistakes.

There are always fights around. Don't go into a fight undertrained.

the only possible thing that could be wrong is timing/sharpness...

I train ridiculously hard... so my stamina/endurance/weight/speed and confidence will be there.. especially confidence after reading some of the responses here.

I might get sparring 2mora anyway.. been hitting up lot of people after punch drunks response... 13 days until.
