  • Foot Work?

I am currently trying to get my skill better.
I have been doing ok down at the gym in sparring but i am only doing well because i am using my conditioning to run people down.
The trainer wants me to start using more skill, so we took my condition out and I am getting beat.
I started late so age doesn't help I am 32, and my reflexes are ok but not fast.
I need to get my feet moving quicker and better, I have strong legs but I always want to dig them into the ground and not move.
Anyone got any tips or drills they use.

    Thanks

For this, specialized software has been developed by Shawn, in the form of 'sheep darting' (in which I suck camel toe)

What we sometimes do, when sparring, is that one guy spars normally, while the other one is only allowed to defend himself, no punches, just blocking, slipping, footwork, etc. This helps you focus on your footwork, getting out of harms way. Just standing still is no option then. You should try that sometime....

Do you work the heavy bag the same way? Plant yourself and hit? I'm no expert but I've noticed people tend to fight the way they train.

You're "only" using conditioning to win spars? **** that's not a negative

Work up your rope skipping. It really helps. Learn to switch feet, skip on one foot, cross over, do doubles, etc.

Also -- this may sound gay, but -- have you thought about taking up dance? I swing dance, and if I may say, I'm pretty good. Anything you can do to coordinate your feet will help you in the ring. Take your night off from the gym and go to a swing dance or salsa class. It's also a great way to meet single girls; you go alone, and you'll be paired up with single girls as dance partners.

        Her: "What're you doing here?"
You: "I'm a boxer. I'm here to work on my footwork."
        Her: "Really? You box?"

House dancing for me, and I dont even need to skip rope anymore (however I usually dance at least 2 hours on every weekday and G-d knows how much on weekends). Makes you float like a butterfly and gives an excellent balance.

I start ballet tomorrow. God help me. Talk about putting myself out of my comfort zone. I'd prefer a right hook from Stormn'.

But I am serious. My weekend is starting to look interesting.

              SAT - 4 hours boxing / 2 hours ballet
              SUN - 8 mile run / 2 hours ballet

i did two things to develop my footwork. one is using a jump rope every time i train, just for two or three rounds but it helps. the other was to move all the furniture in a room to the walls and shadowbox with a strong emphasis on movement. it made a world of difference for me, hope it helps.
