  • Triceps vs Chest strength for punching

I heard two trainers talk in my club yesterday. One of them said that triceps strength is more important for punches than chest strength. So he has his athletes do skull crushers with curl bars as opposed to bench press.
I always thought that a punch uses chest. My chest works when I hit the bag.
I did not want to barge in and ask why, but it got me very curious.
Did anyone else ever heard this?

Depends on a punch, but I would still say that in between these two groups triceps are more important. However both of these groups have little to do with actual punching power unless you rely on straight arm punches.

A jab uses the deltoids (shoulders) and triceps, a cross uses mostly chest and triceps (the back kind of pulls and releases the punch too), Hooks= mostly chest

In a right cross, the chest works hard during the initial 2/3 of the punch, the lock out (last 1/3) of the punch is mostly triceps

The heck are you dumbies on about? The chest is the least important and most worthless muscle in boxing period. How many boxers do you see with developed chests??? Nuff said.

The most important muscles for punching are probably the back/shoulders along with the muscles in arms such as triceps and also the muscles in and around the stomach abs/obliques and such for pivoting into the punch.

I had one of the hardest punches in my gym and my trainer who's trained many world class and several world champion boxers told me I had one of the hardest punches and yet I did bench press maybe 5-10 times in my entire life and that was mostly just for fun/boredom or just to try it out. When I did lift weights, though I did mostly everything OTHER than chest I concentrated most on my back/shoulders/t****zius area along with legs.
The only punch that a chest muscle might be somewhat important for is just a stationary textbook style jab and that's it. The rest of the punches are thrown in such ways where even though theoretically if you were to just stand still and throw an arm punch it would use the chest, however if you actually throw a proper punch with the proper technique and pivoting, and throw it for POWER then you would know and realize that very little of what you're doing actually uses any chest muscles at all. It uses more of the line of power/energy that travels up and through the back - shoulder - tricep axis with chest playing a very minimal if any role at all.

Just look at the greatest punchers of all time almost none of them had any developed 'chest' muscles/pecs.

The starter of this thread wants to know the uses of those two muscles (only chest and triceps) in boxing. Of cos the hips, legs, traps, shoulders all play important roles, but the chest (pecs) DO play a part in certain punches like a right cross and hook.

Skull crushers are dumb for boxing. Try mimicking the movement you're doing in a skullcrusher in a punch. Quite a gay punch. Narrow grip bench press, while not the best exercise in the world for boxing, is much, much better.
