I broke them sailing, jumped from the deck into the ****pit and landed wrong. AZZA can confirm my story.

The hand high with the elbow out is a controlling tactic. Its basically hovering there and your opponent knows if they try anything with their left hand, that right hand is coming down on them. Your opponent also has a tendency to look at that hand up there and try to figure out a way to get past it, but while they are doing that, they forget about the other punches you can throw.

It also give you the ability to pull down their jab which is absolute hell on their shoulder. Fatigues their jabbing arm very very quickly if they try to throw with any power.

Usually they will start bringing their jab back low in an attempt to try to avoid the pull down, and that is the real purpose of the move. It forces them to either stop jabbing, or to jab in a way that creates perfect counter-punching opportunities.

I also like to do it on occasion with my left hand to their strait right. Although its not really as effective in creating usable openings, it can put them off balance, and it is very discouraging to your opponent.

I agree with you about what I call the "choo-choo". I use it as part of my feinting arsenal, there are lots of subtle feints included in the motion that is not really visible at the low video qualities on youtube.

I have got in the habit of doing it pretty much every time I am about to punch, its definitely something I need to stop doing.
defensive drill is what all our videos should be called! not SPARRING!

I would like anyone reading this to put their right hand high on the side of their foreheads with their elbow out and then throw a punch, try it, and it will be a slapping arm punch from the elbow like trying to knuckle someone on their head (unless they are 7 foot tall!) not what I would call effective. Also leaves your right side of your body very vulnerable.
The hand is not held on the side of the forehead, it is a good foot infront and to the right. It is a punching motion that you have to practice, but once you get it down, you can turn it over pretty good. Its a motion very reminiscent of the "phantom punch" that Ali put Liston down with.

You have to REALLY turn your hand over, you will end up with your palm facing completely right. Think of it as a corkscrew punch.

I only use that punch once or twice though. Just enough to give holding my hand out there like meaning. Just like any other feint, its useless if your opponent doesn't respect the punch you are feinting.

I personally like the move most for tiring out their jabbing arm and forcing them to bring it back low.

And like everything in boxing, there are trade offs and risks you have to take. Leaving your body open is one of them, but you do learn to minimize that risk.

I also have a feeling that we might be talking about different things so if you would tell me what time it is in the video, I could better explain what and why I am doing something.

      **EDIT**

Go to 8:20 of the video. At 8:25 I throw the punch. Even though it wasn't thrown with 100% power, it was still hard enough to spin his head around a bit and make Luke take a step back.

At 3:50 I also threw one a little harder than I intended, but still not with 100% power, Luke says "I'm glad I blocked that one!"

Fair enough ... I don't see how it gels together but fair enough.

Something about your gym, You never seem to be supervised, Just free training how you like, Don't you have a routine and doesn't your trainer keep an eye on you to spot mistakes and stop you making bad habits?

Also who's the guy on the pads, He looks alright.

In the defense video my trainer is standing at ringside at the back left post. Nothing goes unsupervised in the gym.

And which guy on the pads? White gloves is Josh; 141lb. Blue gloves is Christian, 130's. Christian is fast, but unfortunately he is a bleeder. 0-3 with 3 stoppages on his nose.

It sucks because he is pretty good, but if he even gets tapped on his nose it starts gushing blood.

I think I know what you guys are talking about now.

When I put my hands up to my ears and stick my elbows way out. That wasn't anything boxing related, just sticking my tongue out and making elephant ears at Luke, lol. Probably shouldn't have done it, but I was enjoying myself.

that punch by Ali has nothing to do with carrying your right high and wide. Ali used right hand leads, and right hand arm punches to great effect, timed them perfectly as the opponent came in, but he didnt throw them from the position from where you hold your right hand.

Looping overhand rights normally have a circular motion when you drop your fist and shoulder, bring it back and around in a small circle for leverage and then over the top, a devastating punch if executed right. You hold your right hand too high and too wide for it to be used in the same manner.

Anyway, thats all I have too say and I dont wanna watch the video again. I will let others make up there minds

Yeah, I am glad I have never had any bleeding problems. I have never had any sort of bleeding from my nose ever.

I'm guessing that there is osmething personal going on here because the guy on the pads was ****. He was slow, had bad technique and may be a robot from the Chinese State Circus. No power either and no snap.

Them dudes doing drills need to make it more real. If you don't train at match tempo, you won't learn at match tempo. Be more realistic.

well you again showed you are a mediocre boxer, that guy was throwing pansy shots at you wtf is that at my gym we do alot of drills like that yes but we still keep it intense and we spar normally also. do people at your gym actually spar properly or with any degree of intensity at least???

these drills are valuable but if you dont hit hard and treat it like a fight it will give you **** all help. also that high elbow thing isnt a control tactic wtf........it just makes you look dumb and doesnt "control" them to any degree

maybe when you learn how to box with some intensity and none of this bull****ting around tapping crap people might respect you and your videos

EDIT: the guy on the pads was okay though, nice snap
