  • So I've just completed my first 2 weeks of boxing training...

...and the gym i'm training at has not done a single round of pad work! The guy said that no one should start pad work until they're perfect on the bag, but some of the people training there have done so for 6 plus months and said they havent done any pad work yet, is this normal?

The ***s, Christians and ******s have the 10 commandments, spoken by God to Moses...Boxers have only 1 commandment, "Coach knows best".

6 months before pad work seems abit extreme but he could just be lying to try get rid of those people who just want to get in and get in the ring...and then die in the ring. Who knows? Fact is, if that's the way it is, that's the way it is. I wont believe for a second that if you're excelling on the bags and training that you'll have to wait 6 months before even working on the pads but again, who knows?

Go to training, don't question him, try hard and just wait and see.

i think if there are good boxers at your gym, then the coach is good. the boxers at your gym are a measure of the coach

        Your coach sounds lazy.

I train and help out at a gym and we get people on the pads sometimes on the first night if there going ok, and always on the second.
Using the pads if done correctly is the best way to fix issues and help get people punching and moving correctly.
By holding the pads you can test a persons power, movement, stamina, fitness. Then correct issues and get them to go back to a bag or shadowboxing and work on the problem areas, and with your more experienced people you can see the errors they get when they get tired.

But as JayCoe said it is what it is. Maybe you should look into another Boxing gym if your not happy

thats a bit weird. my coach always takes people on the pads their first time at the gym......i sparred for the first time about 2 weeks after starting boxing, so six months without even hitting the pads is weird.

I agree that seems a little weird. The people that have been there a while and have never done pads, are they working their asses off and still not getting attention? or are they lazy? if theyre lazy or not in really good shape that could be why. Maybe you should ask sum1 experienced to do the pads 4 u.

Yea it does look like they are working their asses off and not getting much attention. The people who have been there a while are generally really good from what i've seen of their shadow boxing and bag work, that's why I was really confused.
