  • Boxing a Shorter Opponent?

What is the best stragedy into fighting a shorter opponent? All I know that is you have reach as your advantage, but nothing else.

    UPPERCUTS!!!!

if your opponent is better on the inside than you are you should punch him on the way in then tie him up. try pivoting as he tries to get inside then hit him and move.

        Damn right............ uppercuts!

Also shorter opponents tend to have shorter arms so expect more leaping lead hooks to close the distance, more often or not they will fight a going forward style.

        Also watch their head!

Good strategies are to keep distance, watch you dont drop your hands when punching down.....a dirty little trick is also to lean your weight on them a bit in clinches.

Im not tall but im small so i hate sparring with taller boxers! i find it hard when they stick on the outside just jabbing and moving around, when i try to get to my taller opponent its hard work as i have to bob, weave and duck punches to try and get close enough to land some punches!

            i hope this has helped.

Is it better to fight defensly or offensely against a shorter opponent?

It really depends on how good they are, how hard they hit and how good you are.

As I said before shorter fighters usually are come forward fighters. They are rarely hit and move types. Hell, even Sugar Ray Leonard became the come forward aggressor over the taller boxer Tommy Hearns with the longer reach.

A shorter fighter going back can rarely be effective so there is an argument for meeting fire with fire but when a longer limbed fighter closes the range they lose their advantages and can leave themselves open to closer range attacks ( hooks and uppercuts ) which naturally favour the shorter fighter.

step in with the JAB,, like just jump in with the jab inside to the face and BAM works all the time

i tend to do both but i am a very big guy. if you are the same weight and he is shorter he will probably have more strength and power so you should stay on the outside and box.
