18oz gloves

i always sparred with nothing but 18oz's... one time i went to this other gym to spar all their guys and since i didn't own a pair of gloves i had to use the 20oz they had. 20oz seemed a little too much and my quick hands used up way too much energy. The next day both my elbows and shoulders were sore and im assuming its because of wearing 20oz gloves. Had I been wearing 16s like the rest of them i would of had a much easier time.

18s make sense on the bag or doing shadow.
Sparring, i wouldn't recommend 'em unless your cracking bone with 16s.
They turn your defense to cr@p because all of a sudden you've got this gigantic shield.
Working them seasonally like batista says is probably a good idea.

I've worked with 2 guys in various gyms that wore the 18s for everyone else's benefit - one was in the 150s and the other fought at 135. Kinda scary that such small guys can hit that hard.

but dont spar with them or it will give you help on defense that you wont have come fight night...
i say use them on the bags (heavy and speed)...
it will help with handspeed a great deal because when you put on the regulation size gloves they will feel extremely light and you wont have as much trouble keeping your hands up and less likely to punch yourself out...
its like training with leg weights or hand weights...that helps too...(not too much weight...but a little so when they're off you dont tire as easily and it will help with speed).
