i do train with weights. it's all about how you train. if you train to be a bodybuilder, then its obviously no good for you. you will just tighten up and go up weight classes. i believe lifting for muscle endurance, and lifting for explosiveness are both very effective for boxing.

doing sets of 30 repititions will be very helpful, your muscles wont tire out as fast. and rep schemes that high are not preferable for hypertrophy.

but i think the best thing to do are clean and jerks, and the snatch. (the olympic lifts) training to recruit more cns will make you a harder hitter, and those exercises are not prefearable for hypertrophy. they require a lot of athletic ability, speed, strength, and flexibility. i'm not a follower of the old school boxing training. i think modern principles can be applied effectively.

that is link explaining the many olympic lifts and variations. look at the kid demonstrating as a prime example, he is not bulky at all. but he is strong as ****.

Ive read alot that heavy weights with reps (around 5) below the hypertrophy zone (8-12) is best. The heavy weight stimulates your central nervous system more because it needs to recruit more muscle fibers to move the load, it teaches your body to use what its got best. Most strength youd gain from lifting this way is just CNS adaption, aka no extra mass but greater strength. Olympic lifts and compound lifts should be used when training this way.
