I think it is also important how you go about starting at an early age. I know that back in the Soviet Union, if you signed up for a sport, say, football (soccer) at an early age, you were taught technique at a very early age, and the level of discipline in the academies didn't allow for fooling around and messing about.

Basically, you can start a sport - say, boxing - at an early age, and do it just for fun and slowly pick up technique along the way. Or, you can start at 18, be fully prepared (both mentally and physically), and could achieve more by the age of 25 than someone who started at the age of 10 and messed about in the gym.

That being said, I think that if a young kid was very committed to the sport, and had a serious trainer, he would probably achieve more by the age of 25 than someone who started at 20.

With proper training and disclipline, I would say the best age is about 10 years old.

Mike Tyson started when he was 12 but he couldn't make the Olympic team. There are a lot of factors that go into producing a champion. Starting at the right age is only one of them.
