Hey everyone! I just started boxing about 3 weeks ago. im 16 years old, 136lbs and about 5'9. Ive been training hard and sparred for my first time yesterday. I thought i was doing well for the most part, i have long arms so i was able to keep the other guy away for the most part with 1-2s. but the thing is i guess i was tending to lean backwards and go backwards everytime the other guy was throwing punches (mostly jabs). My trainer was telling me im going to get hit a lot if i do that because it exposes my chin. I guess im supposed to be slipping or whatever? It just seemed weird to me because whenever i did that, i still got hit, sometimes even harder. this is what was confusing me so i tended to keep going backwards instead. of course this got me yelled at. it was kind of discouraging to keep being yelled at even when i was doing what he was telling me to do and i was still getting hit. I really want to compete and carry on with boxing so im deffinatly going to stay with it and just train harder, but i just thought i would share this with all of you and see if you have any tips for a begginner that might help me out? Thanks guys

yea you have to learn how to slip punches, or learn how to use ur foot work to get out of the way, like for example using dimensions etc. or just counter punch him when he throws his punches, like when he jabs quickly slip it and throw your hand then follow with a left hook or uppercut to the body...or my favorite I caught this guy really good with it, he threw his jab and i instantly threw my left uppercut, I caught him and stunned him hard, but yea its all about learning you'll get it all down, you're pretty new to the sport so it'll take some time to master your slipping and weaving punches and your timing so don't worry....and remember don't get discouraged or mad when your trainer yells or tells you something, he's doing it to HELP you because he wants you to learn and not get hurt....remember to always keep your hands up and always stay moving your head because its hard to hit a moving target....

Hey buddy keep at it. You just did something 99.9% of ppl dont have the balls to do, you stepped in the ring with someone (likely) far more experienced than you, someone that could kick your ass handily. Dont worry about the yelling, hes trying to teach you to box thats all.
Shadowbox...alot. Hopefully you were paying attention to what the other guy was doing because you should be coming up with counters for yourself and examining why you got hit and what would have stopped it. Imagine your sparring partner while shadowboxing.

Hands up, elbows in, knees loose, left at 12, right at 20 past (orthadox), upper body turned shoulder first, chin down, eyes up, 70-80% of body weight on back leg. Real easy for me to list, reasonably easy to do on a bag, hard as hell to do in the ring...I know this because after those first few seconds I drop most of it.

hey everyone thanks for all the tips. now when i think about it when i was slipping i think i was looking down and taking my eyes off him and that might be why i kept getting hit even when i thought i was slipping correctly. i am supposed to keep my eyes on him and his punches when i slip, correct? thanks again

Try not to watch his punches, keep roughly eye contact. A good way to get a sneaky shot in is to make eye contact and then backhand straight him into the body, wont expect it at all. If you watch his punches you're more likely to become defensive. If you draw a little face on a bag I can tell you lots of things to do, just through stuff i've read and figuring stuff out but in the ring when 'the bag' can move and hit back, it's pretty hard. I remember a while ago when I had a "spar" with my brother (just a mess about with mitts, two brothers, brothers fight) somebody taught him (brief boxing experience) to glance at the feet which would then make them look at ground, allowing you to deliver a shot...I don't know if he made that **** up or if somebody was ****** enough to actually teach him that but at the time I had very little boxing knowledge and he tried it on me and I just hit him, it was ******. As a rule of thumb, i'd say keep your eyes roughly on his. Unless you're body sparring, then keep them on the chest.
