  • Ankles

So when I started boxing whilst everybody else was saying "oo you're going to have a broken nose and lose your teeth" my dad mentioned that i'd have to be careful with my ankles which is a really weird thing to think of when you're talking about a sport which involves constant hits to the head. Now I know what he meant, I don't know how he knew it, he's never boxed as far as I know, I guess boxing was probably one of those sports which people in gernal used to just commonly watch which isn't so common nowadays. Anyway, so, I went for my run today and just after I started my ankles start too really really hurt, I ignore it because pain is transient right? Fear is your friend, pain is your enemy and all that. I kept going and then I began to notice I was limping whilst I was running, I stopped and walked for abit and then tried again. After that, I just had to stop, rather than being my fitness or leg strength it was just too uncomfortable/painful to run and my rational mind won the argument over my "fighter mind" and I basically decided that yeah I can be the tough man and carry on running or I can realise that by running i'm probably making it worse and wont be able to train tomorrow, so I stopped. I'd say I did about 50% of the running I usually do which is embarrassing esp' after last time I had to stop running because my leg gave way and I tried to carry on but it just stopped, a proper mind vs body experience haha.

Now I reckon it's probably all of the movements, you put your body weight on your legs, mostly your backleg which actually hurts more and all of the movements, transfer of weights, jumping in fitness etc and running. So basically, how do I stop it/prevent it?

Maybe try getting an ankle brace, or putting athletic tape over your ankle to kind of hold it in a position that reduces the pain for you.

Just curious, does it hurt a lot when you pull your foot up to your shin (as to have your toes almost touch your shin). I know I get ankle pain often when I run (just not as bad as yours) and mine really hurts when I pull my foot up toward my shin. My pain usually subsides by itself (I don't even use an ankle brace), but, if yours persists, try seeing a doctor man.

Probably a smart idea that you stopped running though. Always better to lay off training for one day than to have to do it for a month because you didn't stop yourself in time.

My ankles have never hurt before whilst running or training, I think it's just a one off thing which I hope wont keep reoccuring. And nah my ankle doesn't hurt when I pull my foot up towards my shin. Yeah, that's how I felt, i'd rather have not finished running today and train tomorrow properly than either not train tomorrow or train half assed.
