  • Keep your eyes on the Prize

There is a good reason that your trainer told you to always keep your eyes on your opponent. If you turn away you can be hit in any number of ways and you won't be able to see it coming.

This is just one of the many mistakes Calzaghe made against Hopkins.

In boxing the prize is to knock that guy in front of you on his ass! If you ain't looking at him you ain't gonna get the job done.

In theory that is true, but in practise it doesn't always happen. Look at the bad boxing habits Winky Wright has evolved in his old age, yet few of his opponents can deal with it. Wright just stands there with his hands up, covering his eyes, and blocks by taking the full force of the punch. He then counters his opponent who is conveniently right in front of him waiting to get hit. For some strange reason too many of these young boxers have never heard of lateral movement.

A couple of years ago Arturo Gatti fought some guy who tried the Winky Wright defense, I think Leonard Dorin was his name. Dorin covered himself, including his eyes, and allowed Gatti to hit him at will. Gatti merely stepped sideways and unloaded a lefthook to the body. A perfect liver-shot. Dorin went down and didn't get up. The moral of the story is he covered his eyes and couldn't see the punch coming. It's the ones you don't see that do the damage.
