  • Give it all up for boxing or not?

Right, im not gonna lie to myself any longer. Im obsessed with boxing. Its becoming the main thing in my life, i dont drink even socially any more for fear for my fitness, i sometimes miss social events just to go to the boxing gym, i arrive at the gym half hour early just because i love the gym, i stay late every session, everything i eat, do is based around boxing. I dont think its got to the point where its ******ly obsessive, cos i still see friends and do social activities, only with close friends though!
Now heres my dilema, in september, if i get the grades i should be going to university in northampton, which is 3 hours away from my boxing gym. September is also when the season starts when i should be having my first fight. Im sure you can start to see the dilemma im put in here! My mum really wants me to go to university, and to be honest, before i started boxing i wanted to too. But boxing has put a different perspective on things, im wondering whether to just have a year gap, get a job and concentrate hard on training and go to uni next year, go to uni and forget about it (shudder), or just drop uni all together. Some advice would be great! Sorry for the long post

Unless you have a truly great chance of being a decent professional boxer then go to university.

Thats actually i tough decision, I myself would drop the University. I'm not fond of doing work, i just like to box.
But do you think you're going to go Professional? If not stick to the University, if you think you're going professional then i would stay. But hey it's you're choice, this is a life changing thing to.

your alomst egsactly the same as me, egsactly

iim the same obbsed totallty obsessed ,

deep downou think you can make it, you dont want to miss a training sesiion coz you know its gonna pay off one day , you dream just like me.

my mam is wanting me to go to a collage that will make me miss boxing and im so stuck,

i dont say to my prents i want to be a pro boxer in fact i dont tell anyone, just keep it to myself,

its up to you mate, onluy you can make your mind up,

is there any way around it? boxing gym near uni or anyting?
nother gym that has diffrent times?

"wondering whether to just have a year gap, get a job and concentrate hard on training and go to uni next year"

sounds good that what you said above, have a gap year, get a job get some money, and foucs hard on training but really focus on training , dont just have gap year for noting you gota work ur arse off and get your fights going good.

you only have 1 life? you can go to uni any time you want, University can wait, the job will be goood expiricence also, so its not really a gap year as your out there working, explain to your mum and shel probly understand as your probs old enough to make your pwn decisions,

however saying all that im completly biased and boxing has brain washed me a little bit so you make the decision your self, as i dont know you persoanlly,

thats my opinon and thoughts anyway,

p.s if you found me helpfull in anyway please can i have some green K......or red? if you found me bad.

I would love to say that im going to be the next lewis etc, but i cant even guarantee id go pro. My trainers at the gym are ecstatic over me, as ive only been boxing 2-3 months and am already sparring guys with 10 fights under their belt and not doing so bad, my size and punch power helps a lot too! Its just the mother thats stopping me having the gap, she says she wont pay for me to go to university if i wait a year, and it costs like £3000, i cant tell her i want to box instead as she would hit the roof, she hates boxing!
Im so stuck its unbelievable, sometimes i cant sleep cos im just in split minds over what to do.

p.s There will be boxing gyms down near university, but i really would like to stay at my gym, amazing trainers, a lot of really good amateur fighters, had lots of pro's in the past, its a no nonsense old school gym.

Edit: I will do if you tell me how tricky lol! And i dont mean to brag in any way in this post, just stating whats been said about me!

every thing you sed here reminds me of my self my mum dosent like me boxing, wants me to fucos on work and collage and i also love my gym and have really old school really good gym,

the truth is that although we love our own gym there is others out there some better and some worse you should do some research and fishing about for a gym near uni,

its all or noting, work your arse off and hit a break and you got it all in boxing, or **** up your boxing and you got nothing, well in turth you still wouldnt have noting wud you? you can get loas, toher jobs, might change mid ideas everyintg can change of a period of a year,

you sound really stuck, nopt much help i can give,

if it was me with my mum and dad, and i was gin ot uni, i would first check out the other gyms near uni by internet or whtever coz u neva no what you might find even if you really dont want to go to one, i than wud probably have the gap year, but i wudnt call it that as it sounds lazy, anyway choice is yours , choice is yours, no matter what you do, parents will still like you lol, probably change their mind and give u the money even next year

Yeah your right, just had another chat with her and she said theres no way shes paying for it next year, and she hopes my boxing isnt influencing my decision! The only reason i want to go to university in the first place is to get a decent job that pays well, thats my only reason. I really wouldnt care about it if i could get the same type of job without going to university!

Ive had a look for gyms in northampton, apparantly theres only one boxing gym and its a ex-servicemans gym :/ Im looking for real old school ones with coaches that shout at you etc, i find it really motivational! I also feel i should at least have 1 fight for my current club as theyve trained me up and spent their time on me.

its hard for me to speak cause u dont live in the US...but if u were here i'd say box...universities are worthless here....but there they prob decent...i understand u not wanting to switch gyms...however its not like u been there 10years...so i'd make a trip to some of the gyms near the university and talk to some guys c how it is..if u dont like the feel...then think hard on a plan to stay where u at...if it seems like some people u can get along with and get good training..i'd prob do the university + boxing

How about you go to University and do it there? You can join the boxing society or even the local boxing gym in the city/town. You're only at Uni' for 30 weeks, your easter hol is 5 weeks, your summer is like 4 months. You have plenty of time to do both. You don't have to forget boxing just because you're at Uni'.
